Alex Tirapelle of Clovis, California --- champion athlete, gifted scholar and worthy citizen - is one of the 2001 regional winners of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award given by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. This award is presented annually to five regional winners and is based equally on outstanding wrestling achievement, scholastic achievement and citizenship. One national winner will be selected from these five regions. Alex will attend the National Wrestling Hall of Fame honors banquet in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on June 2, where the national winner will be announced. Alex Tirapelle of Clovis High School will graduate with a 4.0 GPA and Valedictorian of his class. He is a member of the National Honor Society and was Block "C" president. Tirapelle is a three-time California State Champion, a National High School Senior Champion and is ranked No. 1 in his weight class by the National High School Coaches Association and Wrestling USA Magazine. He was selected for the 2001 Dapper Dan USA Team and the 2001 Wrestling USA Dream Team. He received the Central Section Athlete of the Year 2001 and the 2001 Garrison Award for Outstanding Scholar/Wrestler in the USA. During his senior year he was named Outstanding Wrestler at four different tournaments. Tirapelle was also 1st Team Football All-League and Captain of the Clovis football team. He received the Sassano Blanket Award for the Clovis High School Outstanding Senior Award and was named the school's Athlete of the Year. Alex has been active in his community volunteering as a counselor in the summer athletic program for youths and in the Little Cougar Youth Wrestling Camps. He also helped with the elementary and junior high school programs. He served as a Clovis High School Peer Counselor and was a Marjoree Mason Center Thrift Store Fundraiser volunteer. Alex Tirapelle will wrestle for the University of Illinois next year. There are a total of five regional winners for the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award. The national winner of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award will be presented during the Hall of Fame's Honors Weekend in Stillwater, Okla. June 1-2.
