Jordan Oliver will lead Oklahoma State back into the All-Star Classic after a one-year hiatus. Oliver, the top-ranked 133-pounder in the nation and returning All-American will take on Boise State’s Andrew Hochstrasser at the 2010 NWCA All-Star Classic presented by the Marines in Fresno, Calif., on November 21 at Selland Arena.
Hochstrasser is ranked second by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine coming into the season.
Oliver, a redshirt sophomore from Easton, Pa., surprised many by staying at 133 pounds. He took fourth at the 2010 NCAA Championships, falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Jayson Ness of Minnesota and past NCAA champion Franklin Gomez of Michigan State in the third place bout.
Hochstrasser, a senior from Tooele, Utah, was 9-0 last season before he was sidelined with issues related to the amount of credits pertaining to his eligibility. Despite an appeal, Hochstrasser was forced to sit out the second semester last season and is hungry to get back on the mat after finishing fourth in the 2009 NCAA Championships.
The two have never faced each other in collegiate competition, in part due to the difference in age of the two. Hochstrasser graduated high school in 2004, wrestled for one season at Boise State before taking a two year LDS mission. When he came back to Boise, he redshirted, then competed again at 133 pounds after first qualifying for the NCAA championships in 2005.
Hochstrasser is only the sixth Bronco wrestler to compete in the event and the first since 125-pounder Ben VomBaur wrestled in the event in 2002.
Both Oliver and Hochstrasser were extremely accomplished as prep wrestlers. Hochstrasser set a Utah record for career victories with 170 to go with four high school state championships.
Oliver was the top-ranked 125-pound wrestler in the nation from Easton, where he was a three-time state champion in rugged Pennsylvania. Oliver’s regarded as one of the best lightweights to come out of Pennsylvania in the past decade.
The 45th Annual NWCA All-Star Classic Presented by The Marines will be held at the Selland Arena in Fresno, California on Sunday, November 21, 2010.
