Talented U.S. team set for University World Championships in Torino, Italy, Oct. 26-30

USA Wrestling will be sending strong teams in all three Olympic styles to the 2010 FISU University World Championships, set for Torino, Italy, October 26-30.

The U.S. teams will feature numerous athletes who have had previous international success on the Senior and age-group levels. Many are currently college students, or recent college graduates.

The men’s freestyle competition is set for October 26-27, with women’s freestyle on October 27-28 and Greco-Roman on October 29-30. 

The men’s teams were set at the 2010 University World Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo. in May, and the women’s team was set at the 2010 University Nationals in Akron, Ohio in April.

Leading the U.S. men’s freestyle team is 2008 University World silver medalist Reece Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. Humphrey, a past NCAA runner-up, graduated from The Ohio State Univ. last year.

Competing at 55 kg/121 lbs. is Angel Escobedo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC), who is currently ranked No. 2 in the USA on the Senior level. Escobedo is a past NCAA champion and recent graduate from Indiana Univ.

Four of the U.S. freestyle team members are currently NCAA Div. I stars in college wrestling; Kevin LeValley (Hugo, Colo./Bison WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Jon Reader (Davison, Mich./Iowa State) at 74 kg/163 lbs., Sonny Yohn (Alamosa, Colo./Minnesota Storm) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and Zach Rey (Hopatcong, N.J./Lehigh Valley AC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. LeValley attends Bucknell Univ., Reader goes to Iowa State Univ., Yohn competes for the Univ. of Minnesota and Rey wrestles for Lehigh Univ.

The final spot on the team will feature Marty Usman (Colorado Springs, Colo./GRIT Athletics) at 84 kg/185 lbs., who was a 2010 Div. II champion and three-time All-American at Nebraska-Kearney.

The U.S. team is coached by two respected college coaches, Bruce Burnett of Annapolis, Md. and Lou Rosselli of Columbus, Ohio. Burnett is the head coach at the U.S. Naval Academy, while Rosselli is the assistant coach at The Ohio State Univ. Burnett is a past USA Wrestling National Freestyle Coach. Rosselli, a 1996 Olympian, has served as a U.S. Senior World Team Coach.

The women’s freestyle team has a number of athletes who are top stars on the Senior level.

2010 Senior World silver medalist Elena Pirozhkova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) will wrestle at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. She normally competes at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Pirozhkova was a 2008 University World champion at 67 kg.

2008 Olympian Ali Bernard (New Ulm, Minn./Gator WC) will compete at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. Bernard was on the U.S. Senior World Team in 2009. She also has won two Junior World titles (2003 and 2005). Bernard wrestled in college for the Univ. of Calgary and the Univ. of Regina in Canada.

2010 U.S. Senior World Team member Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) will wrestle at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. Lampe is a two-time Junior World bronze medalist (2007, 2008). She attended the USOEC program at Northern Michigan Univ. before becoming a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete.

Three of the U.S. women’s freestyle team members come from the WCWA women’s college ranks. Two members of the Oklahoma City Univ. team will compete: Ashley Hudson (Wildwood, Mo./Gator WC/OCU) at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Amberle Montgomery (Kent, Wash./Gator WC/OCU) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Also competing is Gabrielle Henry (Columbus, Ohio/Univ. of the Cumberlands) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs., a star at the Univ. of the Cumberlands. 

Montgomery was a 2010 WCWA Women’s College national champion, and currently is ranked No. 3 in the USA on the Senior level. She won a silver medal at the SportAccord World Combat Games this summer. 

Rounding out the U.S. women’s team is USOTC resident athlete Trinity Plessinger (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. She was a member of the 2009 U.S. Junior World Team.

The U.S. women’s freestyle team will be coached by USOEC head coach Shannyn Gillespie of Marquette, Mich. and Link Davis of Oklahoma City, Okla. Davis is an assistant coach at Oklahoma City Univ., and was a 2010 U.S. Senior World Team coach.

The U.S. men’s Greco-Roman Team will be led by Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. Nowry has placed fifth and sixth in the Junior World Championships the last two years.

Five Greco-Roman team members have competed for the USOEC program at Northern Michigan Univ. including Nowry, Kerry Regner (Darlington, Pa./Sunkist Kids) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Aaron Briggs (Tucson, Ariz./New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs., Talan Knox (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Zack Nielsen (Zimmerman, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Nowry, Briggs and Nielsen are still currently members of the 2010-11 USOEC program.

Competing at 60 kg/132 lbs. is Joe Kemmerer (Mountain Top, Pa./Virginia Gold), who was a two-time Div. II national champion for Kutztown Univ., and previously competed at UNC-Greensboro. Competing at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. is Jarod Trice (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Central Michigan), a former star at Central Michigan Univ.

The U.S. Greco-Roman team will be coached by National Greco-Roman Developmental Coach Ike Anderson, Colorado Springs, Colo., Eric Wetzel of Oak Park, Ill. and John Matthews of Phoenix, Ariz. Anderson and Matthews are past U.S. Olympians, and all three coaches are past U.S. Senior World Team members as athletes.

The last University World Championships was held in Thessolonica, Greece in 2008. The U.S. had three women’s freestyle champions, Pirozhkova, plus Katherine Fulp-Allen at 51 kg and Stephany Lee at 72 kg. Sam Hazewinkel won a Greco-Roman gold medal at 55 kg and Tervel Dlagnev won a men’s freestyle gold medal at 120 kg.
