YAKUTSK, Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) - The third international wrestling tournament on memory of the honored coach Dmitry Korkin was hosted this weekend.
The tournament featured 21 teams and 118 athletes. Teams that were in the tournament included Ukraine, Turkey, United States, China, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Mongolia, Kyrgystan, Kazakhstan, Slovakia, Hungary, Tajikistan, and Russia (Dagestan, Ossetia, Byriatya, Tuva, Moskow, Krasnoyarsk and Yakutia).
2008 Olympian Andy Hrovat (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) placed 7th at 84 kg/185 lbs. with a 2-1 record. Hrovat opened with wins over Victor Vavilov of Yakutia-Russia and Ermek Bayduashev of Kazakhstan. He was then defeated by Robert Tavgazov of Ossetia-Russia, When Tavgazov failed to make the finals, Hrovat was not eligible for the repechage.
Hrovat is living and training in Russia this year. He has dropped down to 84 kg, the weight class where he made the 2008 U.S. Olympic team and 2006 U.S. World Team.
Participants who ranked 1,2 and 3 places are awarded with medals, diplomas and cash prizes of: 1st place – $3,000, 2nd place – $2,000, 3rd place – $1,000. The coach who prepared the champion also was awarded by cash prize of $2,000. The total prize fund was $126,000. There are also special prizes from sponsors.
