MOSCOW, Russia – The final U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler and the first two U.S. women’s freestyle wrestlers have weighed in and received their draws at the World Wrestling Championships for competition on Wednesday at the Olympiysky Sports Complex.
The final U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler is Jake Fisher (Boise, Idaho/New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. Fisher will have a challenging opening match against 2008 Olympic bronze medalist and 2007 World bronze medalist Christophe Guenot of France.
Fisher is the only member of the U.S. Greco-Roman World Team who is competing in his first World Championships.
“Jake has looked good. He had a good training camp. He prepared well and made weight well. We have high hopes for Jake. He is young. He is in his first World Championships, a rookie here. He has good fight in him and a good heart. He can do well if he puts it together,†said National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser.
The first two U.S. women’s freestyle wrestlers weighed in and received their draws.
At 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) will open with 2006 World bronze medalist Iwona Matkowska of Poland, who was also a 2010 CISM World Military champion.
At 51 kg/112.25 lbs., Jessica Medina (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) starts with Maria Serrano of Spain. Serrano’s top performance was a bronze medal in the 2007 European Championships.
Lampe is on her first U.S. World team. Medina is competing in her second straight World Championships.
“We need to go out and wrestle aggressively,†said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner. “We must let ourselves open up and give ourselves a lot of chances to win. If we do that, we will be fine. Alyssa Lampe has a lot of great offense and she needs to use it. Jessica Medina has improved a lot. She needs to be opportunistic in taking her shots. She has a great defense, but she needs to get her offense going and put points on the board.
