Matt Markowski of Florida named a regional winner of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award

 MATT MARKOWSKI of Fort Myers, Florida --- champion athlete, gifted scholar and worthy citizen - is one of the 2001 regional winners of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award given by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.    This award is presented annually to five regional winners and is based equally on outstanding wrestling achievement, scholastic achievement and citizenship.  One national winner will be selected from these five regions.  Matt will attend the National Wrestling Hall of Fame honors banquet in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on June 2, where the national winner will be announced.    Matt Markowski of Fort Myers High School will graduate with a 4.18 GPA and is a member of the Quill and Scroll Society, Renaissance and Youth Alive organizations.  He is frequently requested as a guest speaker at school Renaissance rallies and church youth groups.   Matt was selected to be a member of the USA Wrestling Magazine 2001 All Academic Team.    Markowski is a three-time Florida high school wrestling state champion and a ten-time Florida Freestyle/Greco wrestling state champion.   He was a 1999 Cadet Freestyle All-American and  a 2001 NHSCA Senior Nationals All-American.  For his outstanding achievements Matt was named the 2001 3A Wrestler of the Year and the 2001 Rotary South Scholar Athlete of the Year.  Three times he was named Sportsmen Club of Southwest Florida Athlete of the Year.    There are a total of five regional winners for the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award. The national winner of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award will be presented during the Hall of Fame's Honors Weekend in Stillwater, Okla. June 1-2.
