LAHTI, Finland – Sgt Donavan Depatto (Camp Lejeune, N.C./U.S. Marine Corps) placed fifth at 60 kg/132 lbs. in Greco-Roman on the final day at the CISM World Military Championships on Sunday. Depatto was the only one of the four U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers competing on Sunday to qualify for a medal match. He was defeated in the bronze-medal bout by Abdolmohammad Papi of Iran, 0-1, 0-2. He opened with a loss to Jussi-Pekka Neimisto of Finland, 0-1, 1-3. When Neimisto reached the finals, Depatto was pulled back into the repechage rounds. He scored a 6-0, 6-0 technical fall over Smail Benhachem in his first repechage match. Placing seventh at 84 kg/185 lbs. was SGT Peter Hicks (Fort Carson, Colo./U.S. Army) who went 1-1 in the tournament. He opened with a win over Kyung-Wook Jim of Korea, 0-1, 3-0, 1-0, then lost to Tuomas Tarino of Finland, 0-1, 0-3. When Tarino failed to reach the finals, Hicks was not eligible for the repechage. The other two U.S. wrestlers competing Sunday lost their opening match and were eliminated, SGT Steven Forrest (Camp Lejeune, N.C./U.S. Marine Corps) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and SPC Timothy Taylor, Fort Carson, Colo. (U.S. Army) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Taylor finished ninth, while Forrest did not place in the top 10. The USA had no Greco-Roman medals at this year’s event. Along with Depatto, SPC Justin Millard (Fort Carson, Colo./U.S. Army) placed fifth at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., the top U.S. Greco-Roman placements In the final Greco-Roman team standings, the USA was 11th with 18 points. Ukraine won the team title with 51 points, followed by Iran with 49 and Korea with 32. In the Nation’s Cup standings, which combined the men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman results, the USA finished ninth with 40 points. Iran won the Nation’s Cup with 115 points, followed by Belarus with 80 points and Ukraine with 78 points. The U.S. came home with three medals for the weekend. SGT Iris Smith (Fort Carson, Colo./U.S. Army),won a gold medal at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. in women’s freestyle. Claiming bronze medals were SPC Othella Lucas (Fort Carson, Colo./U.S. Army) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. in women’s freestyle and PVT Angel Cejudo (Fort Carson, Colo./U.S. Army) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. in men’s freestyle.
