Wrestling among sports on first day of Youth Olympic Games on Sunday

Team USA takes to the playing fields Sunday for the first day of competition at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. 

The inaugural event welcomes approximately 3,600 athletes ages 14-18 from more than 200 countries competing in 26 sports. 

Competition kicks off Sunday with Team USA athletes competing in badminton, basketball, fencing, swimming, taekwondo, triathlon and wrestling.

The Greco-Roman competition will be held on Sunday, August 15.

Wrestling starts with Greco-Roman, and the U.S. will be represented by Luke Sheridan of Concord, Calif. at 85 kg/185 lbs. Sheridan will be a senior at will be at De La Salle High School in California. He was a 2010 Junior Nationals Greco-Roman champion. At the 2010 FILA Cadet Nationals, he was second in freestyle and third in Greco-Roman. Sheridan was also second in freestyle and third in Greco-Roman at the 2009 Cadet Nationals. He placed third in the 2010 California state high school tournament.

The U.S. Youth Olympic Games coach is Mark Halvorson of Brentwood, Calif. Halvorson is also Sheridan’s coach at De La Salle High School in California, and with the Concord CYC.

According to the FILA wrestling website for the Youth Olympic Games, the field of competitors for 85 kg in Greco-Roman includes:

Hamdy Moustafa Abdelwahab (Egypt) 
Ruslan Adzhigov (Russia)
Jun-Hyeong Choi (South Korea)
Ruslan Kamilov (Uzbekistan)
Varos Petrosyan (Armenia)
Lucas Sheridan (United States)

HOW TO FOLLOW THE YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES

Universal Sports will broadcast daily highlight coverage of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games. The Youth Olympic Games programming will air daily at 2 p.m. ET and be repeated at midnight ET from August 15-27. The show will feature all 26 sports contended over the 13-day duration of the Youth Olympic Games, each of which will be featured as part of the London Olympic Games in 2012. Universal Sports’ show will feature highlights, news and information based on the day’s events. There will also be VOD highlights available on:
