Update provided by Van Stokes, CISM Team Captain LAHTI, Finland - PVT Angel Cejudo (Fort Carson, Colo./U.S. Army) won a bronze medal at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. in men’s freestyle on the first day of the CISM World Military Championships on Thursday. In the bronze-medal match, Cejudo defeated Zhan Safian of Belarus, 0-2, 3-0, 2-1. Cejudo dropped the first period after being turned in a front headlock. In the second period, Cejudo used movement and quickness for three takedowns without allowing a point. In the final period, he again attacked the leg for the last takedown and deciding point. According to Cejudo, “Coach Lewis said to keep scoring. He trusted me to get the takedowns. I didn’t let the pressure off my opponent.†Unlike his previous bout, Cejudo stayed with his plan of moving and scoring on Safian. Cejudo lost in the semifinals to Mohammad Naderi of Iran, 2-1, 1-1, 0-1. Cejudo was seven seconds from winning the match in the second period when Naderi scored with a high single leg. In the final period, Naderi scored a takedown at the 1:37 mark to notch the win. Naderi went on to win the gold medal as Iran won all three weight classes contested. In his fist bout, Cejudo beat Mohammed Karbou of Morocco 7-0, 7-0. Neither period lasted more than a minute. At 96 kg, Nader Maghribi was pinned by Johannes Kessel, Germany, at 1:06 in the first period. Maghribi, the 2010 Armed Forces Freestyle Champion normally wrestles Greco-Roman for the Air Force. Maghribi finished tenth in the weight class. Iran won all three gold medals awarded in freestyle on Thursday. The U.S. Armed Forces did not have an entry in 55 kg. Freestyle competition continues on Friday in 60 kg, 74 kg, 84 kg, and 120 kg, along with Women’s 48 kg and 63 kg. Five U.S. wrestlers weighed in and received their draws for Friday. Greco-Roman and the remaining Women’s weight classes will be conducted on Saturday and Sunday. The competition features the military wrestlers from 22 countries. Women will be competing for the first time in the history of CISM Wrestling.
