PITESTI, ROMANIA - Chas Betts (St. Michael, Minn./Minnesota Storm) claimed a silver medal at 84 kg/185 lbs. in Greco-Roman, the top U.S. performance at the Ion Corneanu Memorial International, August 7-8.
Betts was defeated in the gold-medal finals by 2008 Olympic silver medalist Zoltan Fodor of Hungary.
Betts won his first two bouts, defeating Tamas Atila of Romania and Adrian Mocanu of Moldova, which placed him in the championship finals.
Betts was a member of the 2009 U.S. World Team, and is currently ranked No. 2 in the United States in his weight class.
Two U.S wrestlers competing at 74 kg/163 lbs. placed fifth after losing bronze-medal matches: Andy Bisek (Chaska, Minn./Minnesota Storm) and George Bancroft (Colorado Springs, Colo./OTC).
Bisek won his first two matches before losing to eventual champion Renato Kun of Hungary in the semifinals. He was defeated in his bronze-medal bout by Petros Manlouilidias of Greece.
Bancroft won his first bout against American Anton Gottfredson, then fell to Tamas Lorincz of Hungary in the second round. After Lorincz made the finals, Bancroft was pulled back into the repechage rounds. He won his first repechage match, then was beaten for the bronze medal by Neven Zugaj of Croatia.
