Indiana's Mitch Sliga drives in for a takedown during his finals win Friday. John Sachs photo. FARGO, N.D. – Indiana’s Mitch Sliga joined a very elite group on Friday. Sliga won a USA Wrestling Triple Crown after capturing the Cadet Nationals freestyle title at 189 pounds on Friday afternoon at the FargoDome. He becomes this year’s only Cadet Triple Crown winner after capturing a Cadet Nationals Folkstyle title this past spring before winning a Greco-Roman crown on Monday. Sliga swept Minnesota’s Adam Josephson 7-2, 2-0 in the freestyle finals to complete the prestigious Triple Crown. Three wrestlers won the Cadet Triple Crown in 2009. Sliga’s performance highlighted Day 6 of the ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet Nationals. He was one of 17 champions crowned in freestyle. Washington’s Tyler Coates (160), the Outstanding Wrestler in the Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman competition, had his run halted in a finals setback to Georgia’s Glen Climmons. Coates had pinned 13 of 14 Fargo opponents before the finals setback. Climmons was named Outstanding Wrestler in freestyle. He also won a Cadet Nationals Folkstyle title this year. 2009 Cadet Nationals freestyle champion Ben Whitford of Illinois (125) repeated as champion after beating Mike Labry of Ohio for the title on Friday. Whitford won the Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman title on Monday. Whitford led Illinois to the team title. Illinois’ Jered Cortez (112) and Brian Murphy (140) also won individual crowns. Zane Richards of Illinois (130) fell just short in his bid for the Triple Crown in Cadets. Richards finished third in freestyle. Pennsylvania’s Brooks Black (285) became a double Fargo champion this year by beat Florida’s Doug Vollaro 1-0, 1-0 in the freestyle finals. Brooks also beat Vollaro in the Greco-Roman title bout. Washington’s Jordan Rogers became a double champion at 171 with a dramatic pin over Sam Brooks of Illinois. Rogers fell behind early before throwing Brooks and pinning him near the end of the first period. He won a Greco-Roman title on Monday. Rogers was second in Cadet Nationals in freestyle in 2009. Three wrestlers fell just short of earning double titles with a crown in freestyle. Michigan’s Jacob Schmitt (105), Iowa’s Jack Hathaway (112) and Michigan’s Adam Coon (215) each placed second. Austin Hood avenged a loss to Schmitt in Greco-Roman finals in earning a 0-1, 5-0, 1-1 win in the freestyle finals. Cortez downed Hathaway 0-1, 4-1, 1-0 in the gold-medal match. Ohio’s Ty Walz beat Coon in the finals. Nebraska’s Thomas Gilman won a tough 119 class by downing Bryce Brill of Illinois 1-1, 1-1, 2-0 finals victory. Gilman was third in this event last year and placed second in FILA Cadet Nationals earlier this season. Gilman is part of the powerhouse Omaha Skutt Catholic program that has won the last 13 Nebraska Class B state titles under Coach Brad Hildebrandt. Gilman, who will be a junior, is a two-time state champion. Wrestlers who also won Cadet Nationals freestyle titles are Delaware’s Brent Fleetwood (84), Oregon’s Ronnie Bresser (91), Iowa’s Phillip Laux (98), Virginia’s Brandon Jeske (130), Minnesota’s Jake Short (135), Pennsylvania’s Chance Marsteller (145) and Texas’ Oliver Pierce (152).
