Richards, Sliga continue Triple Crown quests after unbeaten starts in Cadet Nationals freestyle competition

FARGO, N.D. – Zane Richards of Illinois and Mitch Sliga of Indiana kept their quests alive for USA Wrestling Triple Crowns after completing Day 1 of the Cadet Nationals freestyle competition unbeaten.

Richards went 6-0 at 130 pounds and Sliga was 4-0 at 189 on Day 4 of the ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet Nationals on Wednesday at the FargoDome

Richards and Sliga already own Cadet Nationals titles in Folkstyle and Greco-Roman this year, and now are looking to complete the hat trick in freestyle.

Returning Cadet Nationals freestyle champion Ben Whitford of Illinois (125) went 6-0 in freestyle on Wednesday. Whitford won the Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman title on Monday.

Washington’s Tyler Coates (160), the Outstanding Wrestler in the Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman competition, continued his pinning spree on Wednesday. Coates is 6-0 in freestyle with six pins, including five in the first period. Coates pinned all seven Greco-Roman foes in the first period. 

Returning Cadet Nationals freestyle champion Darshawn Sharp of Georgia (105) won his first two matches before dropping his next two and being eliminated on Wednesday.

Sharp placed second in the Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman competition at 98 pounds on Monday. Sharp suffered a broken thumb in the Greco-Roman tournament.

The Cadet Nationals freestyle competition resumes at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday. The Junior Nationals freestyle action starts at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.

The Cadet freestyle finals are Friday with the Junior freestyle finals set for Saturday in Fargo.
