BUDAPEST, Hungary – Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill./New York AC) placed fifth at 50 kg/110 lbs. in Greco-Roman, the top U.S. finish on the first day of the Junior World Championships on Tuesday. Nowry was defeated in the bronze-medal match by Seiki Goya of Japan, 1-0, 0-1, 0-1. Goya had a second-period reversal and had the advantage in the par terre in the final period. Nowry ended the day with a 2-2 record, winning his first two matches before dropping his semifinal match to Eldaniz Azizli of Azerbaijan, 0-1, 0-6. “I started out good and had wins over Kyrgyzstan and Armenia. I slowed down a little bit with Azerbaijan. In the last match against Japan, I didn’t stick to the game plan the coaches and I talked about and I fell short,†said Nowry. Nowry was sixth at 50 kg last year at the Junior World Championships. This is his final year on the FILA Junior level. “Any international experience will help you to get where you want to go. If you want to be the best in the world, you have to wrestle against the best athletes,†said Nowry. Three other U.S. wrestlers competed on Tuesday, but fell short of the medal rounds and did not place in the top 10 of their divisions: Jimmy Chase (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Alec Ortiz (Grand Ronde, Ore./Minnesota Storm) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Robert Barbour, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. "Everybody came to represent the country with the goal of placing, and we fell short," said U.S. Coach Scott Green. None of the four guys medalled today. It is a disappointment to them for sure, and a disappointment for the coaching staff." "The guys have to leave knowing they have to get more technical, more aggressive and more able to score on their feet," said Green.
