FARGO, N.D. – Two wrestlers repeated as champions, two kept their Triple Crown hopes alive, one captured his state’s first title and another pinned his way to the Outstanding Wrestler award in the Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman competition.

Zane Richards of Illinois (130 pounds) and Brooks Black of Pennsylvania (285) repeated as champions on Monday afternoon at the FargoDome.

Richards and Indiana’s Mitch Sliga (189) also moved one big step closer to winning a prestigious Triple Crown in Cadets. Both wrestlers won a Folkstyle Nationals title earlier this year in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Richards and Sliga will look to win Triple Crowns by capturing freestyle titles later this week. Washington’s Tyler Coates (160) was named Outstanding Wrestler.

Scott Gibbons gave Louisiana its first national champion in history – in Cadets or Juniors in any style – when he swept New York’s Burke Paddock 1-0, 2-1 in the 152 finals.

Pennsylvania won the team title as Black and Patrick Coover (140) each won individual titles. Black downed Florida’s Doug Vollaro 1-0, 0-1, 1-0 in the final round.

Sliga rallied to beat Jesse Doyle of North Carolina 0-3, 1-0, 3-0 in the finals.

Coates capped an amazing tournament with a first-period pin over Justin Valencia of Illinois. Coates pinned every opponent he faced in the Cadet tournament in the first period.

Washington’s Jordan Rogers (171) also pinned his way through the tournament. Rogers, a double All-American last year, pinned Matt Reed of Kansas in just 49 seconds in the finals. Rogers will compete for the U.S. in the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

Florida’s Dylan Lucas beat returning champion Dylan Akers of Texas 2-0, 1-0 in the 91 finals.

New Jersey’s Joseph McKenna rallied to down Georgia’s Darshawn Sharp in the 98 finals. McKenna dropped the first period 7-1 before taking the next two 1-0, 2-1.

Sharp was second in this event for the second straight year. He is a returning Cadet champion in freestyle. Sharp also won Cadet Folkstyle Nationals earlier this year.

Ben Whitford of Illinois came from behind to beat Josh Pennell of Michigan 0-6, 5-0, 6-2 in the 125 finals. Whitford was second in Cadet Nationals in Greco-Roman and first in freestyle in 2009 while wrestling for Michigan.

The seven-day USA Wrestling event is being held on 23 mats at the FargoDome on the campus of North Dakota State University.

Cadets feature the nation’s top 15-16 year olds.

The Junior Greco-Roman competition kicked off on Monday, with two sessions in Fargo. Juniors resume action Tuesday at 9 a.m. with the finals scheduled for 3 p.m.

Juniors feature the nation’s top 16-18 year olds.

Michigan’s Taylor Massa, Minnesota’s Jake Waste and Wisconsin’s Devin Peterson won USA Wrestling Cadet Triple Crowns in 2009. Montana’s Jade Rauser became the first Junior Triple Crown winner last year.
