U.S. Junior World Teams ready to compete in Budapest, Hungary, July 20-25

The United States will enter strong teams in all three Olympic styles at the FILA Junior World Wrestling Championships, set for Budapest, Hungary, July 20-25. FILA Juniors are wrestlers who are 17-20 years old.

The U.S. teams were determined at the FILA Junior World Team Trials, which was held in Colorado Springs, Colo., May 28-29. Training camps have been held for all three teams in preparation for the Junior World Championships.

The competition begins with Greco-Roman, which will be held Tuesday, July 20 and Wednesday, July 21.

Competing in his third straight Junior World Championships are Jimmy Chase (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Ben Provisor (Stevens Point, Wis./Sunkist Kids/USOEC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. Provisor is a member of the USOEC program at Northern Michigan Univ.

Three other members of the 2009 U.S. Junior World Team will compete again this year in Budapest: Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill./New York AC) at 50 kg/110 lbs., Jesse Thielke (Germantown, Wis./Ringers) at 55 kg/121 lbs. Thielke is a high school star from Wisconsin, while Nowry is a member of the USOEC program at Northern Michigan Univ.

Last year, the U.S. Junior World Greco-Roman Team placed 14th in the Junior World Championships held in Ankara, Turkey.

Women’s freestyle will follow, with competition on Thursday, July 22 and Friday, July 23. 

Two members of the 2009 FILA Junior World Team in women’s wrestling earned the right to return this year: Victoria Anthony of the New York AC at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and Helen Maroulis of the New York AC at 55 kg/121 lbs. champion 

Anthony was a 2009 Junior World champion at 44 kg/97 lbs. and moved up in weight. Maroulis did not win a Junior World medal last year, but was a 2008 Junior World bronze medalist. Anthony wrestled for Simon Fraser Univ. last year, while Maroulis was at Missouri Baptist.

Three others were also members of past FILA Junior World Teams, Amy Whitbeck of the New York AC at 51 kg/112 lbs., Tatiana Padilla of the Sunkist Kids at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Erin Clodgo of the Sunkist Kids at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. Padilla was a Junior World silver medalist in 2007 and a Junior World bronze medalist in 2008.

Last year, the U.S. Junior World Women’s Freestyle Team placed fifth in the Junior World Championships held in Ankara, Turkey, with two medalists.

Two members of the 2009 U.S. Junior World Team qualified to compete again this year, Jason Chamberlain (Springville, Utah/Bronco WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Chris Perry, (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. 

Perry, who competes for Oklahoma State, placed fifth at the Junior World Championships in 2009. Chamberlain competes for Boise State.

2010 NCAA Div. I champion Matt McDonough (Marion, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) will compete at 60 kg/132 lbs. McDonough won his NCAA title as a freshman at the Univ. of Iowa competing at 125 pounds.

Last year, the U.S. Junior World Women’s Freestyle Team placed fourth in the Junior World Championships held in Ankara, Turkey with three medalists.
