ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Minnesota has always prided itself in its strong Greco-Roman wrestling tradition. The land of 10,000 lakes has produced numerous U.S. Open champions, World Team members, and Olympians in Greco-Roman.

On Thursday, Minnesota 2 showed its strength at the Cadet level by capturing the Greco-Roman title at the 2010 Cadet National Duals on its home turf in Rochester, Minnesota with a 37-28 victory over Pennsylvania 1 in the championship match. Cadets are 15-16 year old wrestlers.

"We wrestled really well," said Minnesota coach Gary Auer. "It's our first national title in a while. Winning it in Rochester is a really good feeling and it's nice to have the title come back home."

Pennsylvania raced out to an early 5-0 lead against Minnesota when Colin Mashack pinned Gannon Volk at 84 pounds. Minnesota's Jarred Oftedahl, a 2009 Cadet Nationals All-American in Greco-Roman, received a forfeit victory at 91 pounds due to the fact that Pennsylvania was without its 91-pounder, Rodney Sunday, who was injured in the previous dual against Michigan.

Pennsylvania retook the lead, 8-6, when Darian Cruz won a hard-fought three-period match against Kyle Gliva at 98 pounds. Cruz, who posted a 9-1 record over the two-day event, scored with a gut wrench in the closing seconds of the final period to take the match.

At 105 pounds, Minnesota's Nate Thomas, a returning Cadet Nationals All-American in Greco-Roman, used several gut wrenches to win in two straight periods over Pennsylvania's Zeke Moisey, which put Minnesota on top 9-8. At 112 pounds, Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman runner-up Sam Brancale extended Minnesota's lead to 13-8 with a technical fall shutout victory over Vito Pasone.

Pennsylvania picked up a key victory at 119 pounds when Corey Keener, who went undefeated in the competition, defeated Mitch Bengtson in three periods. Keener, a 2009 Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman All-American, scored a gut wrench with just under 30 seconds remaining to win the match and cut the deficit to 14-11.

Pennsylvania's Matt Bryer won in two straight periods over Minnesota's Mike Simeon at 125 pounds to knot the score at 14-14.

Dakota Trom, a two-time Minnesota state high school champion for Apple Valley High School, had little trouble with Laike Gardner at 130 pounds, winning in two straight periods, which put Minnesota on top 17-15. Jake Short came back to defeat Casey Kent at 135 pounds, which extended Minnesota's lead to 20-16.

Pennsylvania coach Cameron Plocus points to the matches at 130 and 135 pounds as pivotal matches in the dual.

"I was expecting wins out of both Laike Gardner and Casey Kent," said Plocus. "Obviously, they faced really tough kids, but those matches were crucial. I really thought we were going to start building momentum, but it didn't happen."

Minnesota picked up its third straight victory when Brandon Kingsley, a two-time state high school champion for Apple Valley High School, rolled to a shutout victory in two periods against Pennsylvania's Patrick Coover at 140 pounds.

Pennsylvania phenom Chance Marsteller defeated Minnesota's Daniel Woiwor at 145 pounds.

Minnesota took the next two matches as Nick Wanzek and Tommy Longendyke picked up decisions at 152 and 160 pound respectively to give Minnesota its biggest lead of the dual at 30-21.

"Tommy Longendyke's match was great," said Auer. "He wrestled really well. He came up with a huge win for us."

Pennsylvania's Dakota DesLauriers won at 171 pounds, but Minnesota clinched the dual with wins in the next two weight classes from Adam Josephson (189) and Michael Kroells (215). Pennsylvania's Brooks Black, who wrestles in high school for Blair Academy, won at 285, but it was too little too late as Minnesota took the dual 37-28.

Despite the loss, Plocus was pleased with Pennsylvania's effort in the Greco-Roman competition.

"Obviously, it's not what wanted, but I thought the team wrestled extremely hard," said Plocus. "I thought there were a few matches that could have gone the other way in the Minnesota match. We're more of a freestyle team, so we're excited to start up tomorrow."

It marked the third straight year that Minnesota reached the finals in the Greco-Roman competition. In 2008, Wisconsin edged Minnesota on criteria. Last year Illinois topped Minnesota in the finals.

Auer said losing in the finals the previous two years gave Minnesota motivation this year.

"We pride ourselves in wrestling Greco," said Auer. "Kids in Minnesota want to wrestle Greco. They go on to do great things. If you just take a look at the most recent World Team Trials, we had Jake Clark and Chas Betts both in the finals at 84 kg. It feels great to bring the title back to Minnesota."

Last year's Greco-Roman champion, Illinois, finished third in this year's competition. Illinois went undefeated in its pool before falling to Pennsylvania, 42-24, in the championship pool. Illinois topped Wisconsin, 42-23, in the third-place match.

"After you win it, you want to win it again," said Illinois coach George Kirgan. "It's a little bit of a disappointment, but I think the big goal is to get the kids experience. We learn a lot about our kids and hopefully come Fargo time they're ready to compete and win a national title."

So what was the difference in Illinois' loss to Pennsylvania?

"Pennsylvania beat us in those key situations," said Kirgan. "Times where we needed to get pins and we didn't get pins … and times where we need to keep them from scoring and they scored. You can tell Pennsylvania is a well-coached team. I'll take my hat off to them. They wrestled really well."

Michigan defeated Kansas, 42-21, to place fifth, while New Jersey placed seventh with a 40-29 victory over Idaho.

The freestyle competition is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Central Time on Friday.
