Many of the nation’s best high school senior student-athletes are travelling to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. to participate in the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Leadership Camp, June 14-17.

The participants are 2010 state-level winners of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award, presented annually by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. The camp is hosted by USA Wrestling, the national governing body. This is the fourth straight year for this camp, which is possible through a grant from a private foundation.

"This Leadership Camp is one of the Hall's Educational Outreach programs that connects our mission of preserving history to that of inspiring the sports next generation,” said Lee Roy Smith, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum. “These individuals attending camp receive encouragement and tips from the best-of-the-best in the sport on achieving success in sport and life. It's a great way to perpetuate a legacy of excellence with the most promising youngsters in the sport, in one of the most inspirational atmospheres in sport."

The camp agenda will include instructional sessions with USA Wrestling’s freestyle and Greco Roman national coaches and wrestlers, and will also feature presentations on sport psychology, strength and conditioning, nutrition, leadership development and public speaking, all presented by experts in the field.

Leadership seminars will be presented by 2008 Women’s Olympic Team Leader Stan Zeamer, U.S. Air Force Academy head coach Joel Sharratt and 2000 Olympic champion Brandon Slay. Technique seminars will be provided by coaches Ike Anderson, Sam Barber and Cody Bickley.

On Wednesday, the campers will run the Incline, a vertical mountain course on Colorado Springs’ Cheyenne Mountain which is regularly used for training Olympic athletes.

On Monday night, the athletes will be introduced at a Colorado Springs Sky Sox baseball game. One of the campers will throw out the first pitch, and a number of the campers will assist the grounds crew during the game. The Sky Sox are the AAA affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.

“USA Wrestling is excited to join the Hall of Fame in providing a world-class program at the U.S. Olympic Training Center for the student-athletes chosen to participate in this camp,” said Rich Bender, USA Wrestling Executive Director. “As the home for the Olympic movement, this is an appropriate location to inspire the nation’s best wrestlers to reach for new heights. We are proud to work with these talented athletes and young leaders.”

Part of the foundation’s funding criteria requires that, prior to the camp, the award winners speak to youth groups in their communities on the benefits of participating in extracurricular activities like athletics.

Smith said the leadership and public speaking sessions will help student-athletes become more effective in sharing their personal success stories with young people.
