The nation’s top beach wrestlers are preparing for the 2010 U.S. Beach National Wrestling Championships and World Team Trials will return to Ontario Beach Park (also called Charlotte Beach) in Rochester, N.Y., July 9-11.

It will be the fourth year in a row that Rochester has hosted the U.S. Beach Nationals and World Team Trials, and the event has grown each of the previous seasons. In 2009, a record 125 participants entered the U.S. Beach Nationals in Rochester.

Wrestlers can register online for the event by visiting the official website linked below:

The 2010 U.S. Beach National Championships will be held on Saturday, July 10, with competition in five age groups: Schoolboy/girl, Cadet, Junior, Senior (men and women) and Veterans. In all age groups, weight classes will be determined after weighins, using the blocked weight system.

Two of the returning 2009 Senior Beach National champion have won two career Beach titles, Trevor Chinn of Team Titan at 170 pounds and Nate Patterson of Team Cook at 187.5 pounds.

The Senior Beach World Team Trials will be held on Sunday, July 11. Participants must qualify for this event at the U.S. Beach Nationals the previous day. The Senior Beach World Team Trials will determine the U.S. athletes who will compete in 2010 FILA World Beach Wrestling Championships, set for Budva, Montenegro, August 28-30.

The United States is still seeking its first World champion in Beach wrestling. Jeff Funicello of American Pankration has won two career Beach World bronze medals, the most of any American.

For the third year, the National High School Beach Duals will also be held on Sunday, July 11. High school club teams can enter this competition, and battle for team trophies and bragging rights. A record number of teams entered the 2009 competition. The addition of the High School Duals gives athletes two full days of quality wrestling. Team Titan Worldwide I is the defending champion.

The local organizing committee is the Team Titan Worldwide Wrestling Club, an active and respected USA Wrestling sanctioned club in the community, along with the Monroe County Sports Commission.

“We think we are in great shape,” said Event Director Lou Lombardo. “There has been much interest in the event all year. We expect more dual meet teams this year, in addition to a big field at the national championships.”

Held alongside the U.S. Beach Nationals and World Team Trials will be a number of other exciting sports events at the beach, including beach volleyball, adult kickball, pickleball and other entertainment.

Beach Wrestling was added as a new style of international wrestling, starting in 2005. Athletes compete on sand, in a style that features takedowns within a ring. The sport has been growing in popularity across the nation.

USA Wrestling has sanctioned Beach events since 2005, and held its first U.S. Beach National Championships and World Team Trials in 2006. FILA hosted the first World Championships in 2006 in Antalya, Turkey.
