Byers has already had a great season, winning medals in five international events this winter, including titles at the New York AC International and the Dave Schultz Memorial. When Byers arrived late at weigh-in at the U.S. Open, he was not able to compete, so he will be in the Challenge Tournament in Council Bluffs. He has been the most consistent U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler on the international scene. Brandon Rupp of the New York AC won his first U.S. Open title this year, after placing second behind Byers at the U.S. Open and the World Team Trials in 2009. Akil Patterson, who made the U.S. Open semifinals, finished sixth, and Nader Maghribi placed seventh. Qualifying with Regional wins were Shaun Durfey at the Northeast and Joseph Sheffield at the Northern Plains. Brandon Rupp has shown the ability to win tough matches and has been pushing Byers the last few seasons. Timothy Taylor is capable of great things when he is competing well.
