2002 World champion Dremiel Byers of the U.S. Army has dominated this division since 2005, and has also won a World silver medal in 2009 and a World bronze medal in 2007. Byers has already had a great season, winning medals in five international events this winter, including titles at the New York AC International and the Dave Schultz Memorial. When Byers arrived late at weigh-in at the U.S. Open, he was not able to compete, so he will be in the Challenge Tournament in Council Bluffs. He has been the most consistent U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler on the international scene.

Brandon Rupp of the New York AC won his first U.S. Open title this year, after placing second behind Byers at the U.S. Open and the World Team Trials in 2009. Rupp won Sunkist Kids International this season, as won  medals in three foreign tournaments. He has not beaten Byers this year, but did get one win over him last season at a foreign event. He has established himself as the top challenger for Byers. Lsst week, he won the University World Team Trials event.

The U.S. Open runner-up was the surprising Joe Rizqallah of the Maverick WC, whose best past performance was third at the 2010 University Nationals. Placing third at the U.S. Open was Timothy Taylor of the U.S. Army, is a past U.S. Open champion with extensive experience. Taylor was second behind Byers at the 2008 Olympic Trials, and won a bout in the best-of-three series. 

Robbie Smith of the New York AC was fourth at the U.S. Open, but is expected to drop to 96 kg. Placing fifth in Cleveland was former Team USA member Frank Workman of , who last competed when he was third at the 2006 World Team Trials. Akil Patterson, who made the U.S. Open semifinals, finished sixth, and Nader Maghribi placed seventh. Qualifying with Regional wins were Shaun Durfey at the Northeast and Joseph Sheffield at the Northern Plains. University Nationals champion Jarod Trice and runner-up Steve Andrus are also in the field. Andrus also won the 2010 FILA Junior Nationals

Patterson was third at the New York AC International this year, one of his best efforts. Qualifying with Regional wins were Shaun Durfey of the U.S. Marines at the Northeast and Joseph Sheffield of Y.E.S. Greensboro at the Northern Plains. Durfey was eighth at the U.S. Open this year. Sheffield beat Durfey in the Northern Plains finals. 

University Nationals champion Jarod Trice of the Central Michigan RTC and runner-up Steve Andrus of the Michigan WC are also in the field. Andrus also won the FILA Junior Nationals and the FILA Junior World Team Trials this year in Greco-Roman.

This weight class belongs to Dremiel Byers until somebody takes it away from him. Brandon Rupp has shown the ability to win tough matches and has been pushing Byers the last few seasons. Timothy Taylor is capable of great things when he is competing well. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the field sorts itself out in the early rounds of the World Team Trials.
