COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The matches lived up to their billing. The best-of-3 final round series between Cornell’s Mack Lewnes and Penn State’s Quentin Wright promised to be an entertaining battle and it was every bit of that as Wright rallied to win. Wright dropped the first match before rallying to win the final two bouts over Lewnes in the University World Team Trials freestyle finals at 84 kg/185 lbs. Wright, a past Junior World Team member, was an All-American for Penn State in 2009 before redshirting this past season. Lewnes was an NCAA runner-up for Cornell in 2010. Wright won the second match by fall before prevailing in the third match 2-5, 4-1, 5-3. “I’m happy to be able to come back and win this,†Wright said. “He’s a tough wrestler. The first match, I was a little disappointed. I wasn’t moving enough. The second and third match, I came back strong. I kept wrestling hard the whole time.†Fifteen more champions were crowned in the University and Junior World Team Trials in Greco-Roman and freestyle on Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Champions in each weight class in the University World Team Trials position themselves for a trip to the University World Championships on Oct. 26-30 in Turin, Italy. Any wrestler who finishes in the top three at next month’s U.S. World Team Trials in freestyle, and is eligible for the University division, can challenge the University World Team Trials champion for the spot on the University World Team. The Greco-Roman champions earn a trip to Italy. Champions in each weight class in the Junior World Team Trials advance to the Junior World Championships on July 20-25 in Budapest, Hungary. NCAA champion Matt McDonough of Iowa capped a strong day by winning the Junior freestyle title at 60 kg/132 lbs. He used a pair of early headlocks en route to sweeping a tough young foe in Nick Dardanes. “I wrestled well, but I didn’t wrestle my best,†McDonough said. “I know I’m capable of wrestling better. I had a lot of third periods. It feels good to push through those tight matches. I’m still working to improve and trying to widen the gap.†McDonough earned a sweep in the finals after pulling out some tough wins in the Challenge Tournament. It was his first competition since winning NCAAs as a freshman in late March. “We wrestle tough competition every day in the Iowa wrestling room,†McDonough said. “We don’t go in there and play paddy cake in there. We try to take each others’ heads off and win championships.†Boise State's Jason Chamberlain made his second straight Junior World Team by downing FILA Junior Nationals champion Danny Zilverberg of Minnesota in the finals at 66 kg/145 lbs.
