COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Four divisions, four mats and an entertaining first session of wrestling.

That’s what fans were treated to as the University and U.S. Junior World Team Trials kicked off on Friday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

The finals are now set for 5 p.m. in 15 weight classes in Greco-Roman and freestyle.

One of the biggest matches of the first session saw World University silver medalist Reece Humphrey rally to win a three-period thriller over Daniel Dennis in a battle of NCAA runner-ups at 60 kg/132 lbs.

Dennis rallied for a 5-4 first-period win before Humphrey rebounded to win the last two periods 1-0, 7-0. Humphrey beat Dennis in the finals of this event in 2008.

Humphrey now advances to the best-of-3 final match series in freestyle against University Nationals champion Tyler Graff.

Champions in each weight class in the University World Team Trials position themselves for a trip to the University World Championships on Oct. 26-30 in Turin, Italy.

Any wrestler who finishes in the top three at next month’s U.S. World Team Trials in freestyle, and is eligible for the University division, can challenge the University World Team Trials champion for the spot on the University World Team.

Champions in each weight class in the Junior World Team Trials advance to the Junior World Championships on July 20-25 in Budapest, Hungary.

Chris Perry, fifth in the Junior World Championships last year, rolled into the final round at 84 kg/185 lbs in freestyle. Perry pinned Grant Gambrall in the finals of the Challenge Tournament.

U.S. Senior Open champion Brandon Rupp powered into the University Greco-Roman finals. Rupp will battle University Nationals champion Jarod Trice in the finals.

Past Junior World Team member Tyler Cox reached the Junior finals at 55 kg/121 lbs. Cox will meet 2009 Junior World Team member Jesse Thielke in the finals.

Day 2 of the tournament is set for Saturday at the Olympic Training Center.
