COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Plenty of great wrestling is expected as the best young American freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers in the country converge on the Rocky Mountain region. The University and U.S. Junior World Team Trials are set for Friday and Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The event will be held in Sports Center II, upstairs from the OTC wrestling room. Champions in each weight class in the University World Team Trials advance to the University World Championships on Oct. 26-30 in Turin, Italy. Champions in each weight class in the Junior World Team Trials advance to the Junior World Championships on July 20-25 in Budapest, Hungary. Champions from the University Nationals and Junior Nationals have already clinched a berth in the best-of-3 finals for the Trials. Six members of the 2009 Junior World Team – Max Nowry, Jesse Thielke, Jimmy Chase, Ben Provisor, Travis Rutt and Tyrell Fortune – are expected to compete in the Junior World Team Trials in Greco-Roman. Nowry, Thielke and Chase won titles at April’s FILA Junior Nationals in Cleveland. Provisor placed second. Rutt placed fourth in the U.S. Open against Senior-level wrestlers last month in Cleveland. Past Junior World Team member Tyler Cox and past Junior Nationals champion Ryan Mango also are expected to be wrestling Greco this weekend. FILA Junior Nationals champion Ellis Coleman is another wrestler to watch in Greco at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Coleman placed fourth in the U.S. Open. Nowry also won a University Nationals title. U.S. Open champion Brandon Rupp may be competing in the University World Team Trials in Greco-Roman. Four-time University Nationals champion Andrew Bisek also is expected to compete. In freestyle, 2009 Junior World bronze medalist Jordan Oliver of Oklahoma State is among the top names listed for the Junior Trials. Oliver may compete up a weight class at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. 2009 Junior World Team member Chris Perry also is slated to compete in the Junior Trials. Perry was fifth in the Junior Worlds last year. He placed fourth in the U.S. Open last month at 84 kg/185 lbs. Past World Team member Tony Ramos of Iowa will compete in the Junior Trials at 55 kilos. Ramos was fifth in the 2009 Junior World Championships. Past Junior World Team member David Taylor is expected to be in the mix at 74 kilos in the Junior Trials. Taylor and top Iowa redshirt Derek St. John split a pair of exciting matches at FILA Junior Nationals. Minnesota redshirt Danny Zilverberg was Outstanding Wrestler in the FILA Junior Nationals in freestyle. He won a tough weight class at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. He won back-to-back bouts over twins and Penn State recruits Dylan and Andrew Alton to win the title. Past Junior World Team member Tyler Graff is expected to compete in the University World Team Trials. Graff won University Nationals. He placed fifth at the 2010 NCAA Championships as a freshman for Wisconsin. All-American Quentin Wright of Penn State won University Nationals at 84 kilos and is a top prospect in freestyle. Wright finished sixth in the U.S. Open. Minnesota standout Sonny Yohn won University Nationals in freestyle at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Yohn placed fifth in the U.S. Open. All-American Jarod Trice of Central Michigan won both styles at University Nationals at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. NCAA champion David Zabriskie is among the University entries in freestyle at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Zabriskie placed eighth in the U.S. Open. Iowa’s Jake Kerr, another past Junior World Team member, will compete in the University Trials at 74 kilos. Iowa redshirt Ethen Lofthouse is another wrestler to watch at the Junior World Team Trials in freestyle. He won a strong weight class at 74 kg/163 lbs. at the FILA Junior Nationals. Iowa State’s Chris Spangler was second to Lofthouse. NCAA champion Matt McDonough of Iowa also is expected to compete at 60 kg/132 lbs. He is eligible to wrestle in the Junior and University Trials. NCAA runner-up Daniel Dennis of Iowa is expected to compete in the University Trials at 60 kilos. Dennis previously placed second in that event. NCAA champion J.P. O’Connor of Harvard is entered in the University division at 74 kilos. Bubba Jenkins, who won University Nationals at 66 kilos, said he will not compete in freestyle.
