On Tuesday, May 16, the Univ. of Southern Colorado announced that it would be dropping its very successful Div. II wrestling program immediately. The university president Tito Guerrero III annouced the cut based upon an ongoing shortfall in the athletic department, according to an article in the Pueblo Chieftain. USC placed fifth in the 2001 NCAA Div. II Championships, led by six individual All-Americans. In the 18 years of the program under coach Doug Moses, USC has claimed 11 individual national titles and 65 All-American honors. The university has hosted the NCAA Div II National Wrestling Championships two times. President Guerrero announced a week ago that he would be leaving USC to accept the president's position at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas. According to the article in the Chieftain, Guerrero said the decision was made now because USC must submit its budget for the 2001-2001 fiscal year to the State Board of Agriculture by June.
