Ruiz, Campbell win USOC Twitter vote for April awards

2010 U.S. Open champions Justin Ruiz (Boise, Idaho/New York AC) and Kelsey Campbell (Colorado Springs, Colo//Sunkist Kids) received the most votes on Twitter for the USOC Athlete of the Month awards for April.
Ruiz received 156 votes, which was 50% of the votes cast, to claim the Male Athlete of the Month. In second place was triathlete Matt Chrabat, with 50 votes, or 16% of the total vote. A total of 11 male athletes were nominated.
Ruiz won the 96 kg/211.5 lbs. gold medal at the U.S. Open in Cleveland on April 24, then added a Pan American Championships gold medal in Monterrey, Mexico on April 30.
Campbell received 101 votes, which was 47% of the votes cast, to claim the Female Athlete of the Month. In second place was triathlete Sarah Haskins with 53 votes, or 25% of the balloting. There were 14 female athletes nominated.
Campbell won the gold medal at 59 kg/130 lbs. at the U.S. Open in Cleveland on April 24, and was named the Outstanding Wrestler in the women’s freestyle division.
Wrestling did not enter in the Team of the Month ballot. Winning was the U.S. Gymnastics team with 64% of the vote, followed by the diving team of Thomas Finchum and Nick McCrory with 12% of the vote.
The USOC Twitter fan vote will account for 10% of the total for the USOC monthly awards, which also includes votes from the Olympic family and journalists. The final awards selection will be announced within a few days.
