"It's right now. It's hard, fast, and crisp. I'm not dinking around in there. I'm not a cream puff. I'm a hammer. I'm a lightning bolt." (Tom Brands - World & Olympic Champion and Assistant Coach U. of Iowa) Order the Tom Brands Sweep Single Video See Tom Brands hitting sweep singles: 1 - 2 - 3 See Tom Brands celebrating Olympic glory Tom Brands', Sweep Single Video, shows in typical fashion the dramatic intensity that goes into even the basics of his sweep single. Tom Brands really has the ability to light a fire under the viewer to pay attention and rethink even the basics of a sweep single. It doesn't matter if you learned the sweep a year ago or 20 years ago. Brands will lead you through his techniques and focus you on more key points than you were used to thinking about before. Little things make the difference between an average and a great wrestler and Brands in the Sweep Single Video focuses in on plenty of minor points to build on the foundation of a sweep single. Such simple key points like the physical head pressure he applies, or the hard pull of the wrist, and the direction of his step for the sweep are all seemingly minor points; however, in Brands' hands they become critical details that any coach or wrestler should take the time to reexamine. The video begins with an excellent review of the basic ties that worked for Tom Brands. When Brands says, "I lead with my head", it may have been an obvious point but just him mentioning it serves as an important reminder of his offensive and brutal attacking style of wrestling. He details his motion and movement into a tie-up, saying "I stock my opponent." Once a good foundation for the shot is established, Brands begins to demonstrate the Sweep single or near arm far leg technique that he consistently used throughout his career. Brands then details his favorite setups for the shot. Early on in the video, he says, "I used basic holds. I wrestled basic. I was coached basic. Whenever you get in a rut go back to the basics." Brands shows for basic setups: the push, wrist-tie, elbow-tie, and the elbow push. Each setup is effective and as said before very basic. However, the colorful description of each, again refocuses the viewer into paying attention to the minutiae of the Sweep Single, and finding things to improve on. An entertaining moment in the tape occurs as Brands restfully gets into position to again show a set-up. Immediately, Brands stops, and in an angry self-correcting tone, looks into the camera and says, "Actually what I did right there is not good---that was lazy." The Brands' intensity wasn't just reserved for his opponents it could easily be aimed inward. From then on, Brands' ire is raised and you don't see a relaxed setup or shot again. Nothing but pure intensity follows. And, when Brands gets on a roll the words reflect his desire that put him at the top. "Just do this 50 times before you go to bed; and 50 more when you wake up in the morning; and before you eat lunch; and before a match." The Sweep Single Video ends with Brands showing his favorite finishes. With a phrase like, "re-penetrate", you see that Brands didn't ever want to stay on his knees. His shots were always meant for him to drive back through his opponent. "The guy goes down like a ton of bricks", is Brands' statement as he reinvents and improves the age-old technique of running the pipe from a high level single. Throughout the tape, live examples of Brands executing his sweep series are shown both in real time and slow motion. It's a thrill to see the basics work at such a high level of competition and great to relive the moment of Tom Brands winning the Olympic Gold Medal in Atlanta. The video times in at 45 minutes and really will be a valuable instructional tool for any wrestler and coach.
