CLEVELAND â€" Two of the country’s best young college and international wrestling prospects met early in the U.S. Open freestyle qualifying tournament.

Oklahoma State’s Chris Perry swept Penn State’s Quentin Wright 3-0, 2-1 in a quarterfinal match at 84 kg/185 lbs. on Friday at Cleveland State’s Wolstein Center.

Perry and Wright redshirted this past college season. Wright was an NCAA Championships All-American as a true freshman at Penn State while Perry will compete in his first college season next year.

Perry placed fifth at the 2009 Junior World Championships in freestyle. He’s the younger brother of two-time NCAA champion Mark Perry, who competed for Iowa.

Wright rebounded to win his next match to also advance to Saturday’s championship tournament.

The top eight finishers in the qualifying tournament advanced to Saturday’s championship tournament. The top eight seeds in each weight class did not have to compete in the qualifying tournament.

2010 NCAA runner-up Mack Lewnes of Cornell also moved on to Saturday at 84 kg/185 lbs. Past All-American Doug Umbehauer also moved on in that division.

Also advancing to the championship tournament was NCAA Division II champion Kamarudeen Usman of Nebraska-Kearney at 74 kg/163 lbs.

Past NCAA All-Americans Mark McKnight, Brandon Precin and Zach Sanders each advanced to Day 2 at 55 kg/121 lbs.

Angel Cejudo, older brother of Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo, moved on to the second day at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Angel Cejudo is now competing for the U.S. Army.

The qualifying tournament was held in freestyle in 6 of the 7 weight classes. The exception was 96 kg/211.5 lbs., since it had less than 20 total entries. The entire field in that weight class will compete on Saturday.

The championship tournament in freestyle is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. The finals are scheduled for 7 p.m.
