Friday night report

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Junior and Cadet division semifinal pairings have been determined as USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals started at the UNI-Dome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa on Thursday.

Three weight classes were completed and medals awarded. In the Junior division, champions included Colton Howell of Missouri (98) and Tyler Foley of Michigan (105). In the Cadet division, there was one individual champion determined today, Chad Osmanski of Wisconsin(84). Howell is a past Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman champion. 

All of the other weight classes competed through the quarterfinals, and the semifinal pairings have been determined. 

Among the Junior semifinalists are returning ASICS Folkstyle Junior National champions Jesse Thielke of Wisconsin at 125 pounds and Dylan Ness of Minnesota at 145 pounds. 

Thielke was a Junior World Team member in Greco-Roman last year and was a past Cadet Nationals champion. Ness was a Cadet Triple Crown winner in 2008, winning USA Wrestling national titles in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman that year.

Among the Cadet semifinalists are returning ASICS Folkstyle Cadet National champions Jarred Oftedahl of Minnesota at 91 pounds and Michael Kroells of Minnesota at 189 pounds.

This is the first leg of the coveted USA Wrestling Triple Crown on the Kids, Cadet and Junior levels. To win the Triple Crown, an athlete must win USA Wrestling titles in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman during the same year.

A Cadet Triple Crown winner from last year, Devin Peterson of Wisconsin, is entered in the Junior 171-pound division, and has reached the semifinals.Peterson won his first four matches by pin, with his longest match lasting just 1:41.

Other top stars in the field include:

• Alex Dieringer of Wisconsin, a Cadet Nationals champion in both freestyle and Greco-Roman last year, who is competing at 145 pounds in the Junior division.

• Ravaughn Perkins of Nebraska, a Junior National Greco-Roman champion, who is competing at 160 pounds in the Junior division

• Gage Harrah of Wisconsin, a Cadet Nationals freestyle champion last year, who is competing at 285 pounds in the Junior division.

• Jahwon Akui of Illinois, a 2008 Cadet Nationals champion in both freestyle and Greco-Roman 

ASICS Cadet folkstyle national champions from last year who have moved up to the Junior division and have reached the semifinals include Peterson, Harrah, Derek Elmore of Illinois at 112 pounds and Taylor Henry of Wisconsin at 285 pounds.

Finals of the Junior Division will be webcast live on USA Wrestling's UStream Channel on Friday afternoon.

Zach Siegle of Minnesota, a 2009 Schoolboy Folkstyle champion, has reached the semifinals in the Cadet division this year at 91 pounds.

There were 460 entries in the Junior division this year and 456 entries in the Cadet division.

The Kids divisions will be held on Friday and Saturday, and Veterans divisions will be contested on Saturday.
