USA Wrestling has announced the U.S. lineups for the 2001 Pan American Championships, set for Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic, May 17-20. Held three of every four years during the non-Pan American Games years, the Pan American Championships features the best wrestlers in North, Central and South America. The Greco-Roman and women's tournament will be held May 17-18 and the freestyle tournament will be held May 19-20. Four members of the Greco-Roman 2000 Olympic team and two medalists from Sydney will head the line-up for the United States. Olympic silver medalist Matt Lindland (Oregon City, Ore./Sunkist Kids) will compete up a weight class from the Olympics at 187.25 pounds. Olympic bronze medalist Garrett Lowney (Freedom, Wis./Minnesota Storm) will compete at 213.75 pounds. Olympian Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) finished sixth in Sydney, and will compete for the U.S. at 127.75 pounds. Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) also finished sixth in Sydney, and will compete at 138.75 pounds. 2001 U.S. Nationals champions Jeff Cervone (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force), Marcel Cooper (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) and Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) will also compete for the United States. Cervone will wrestle at 119 pounds, Cooper will wrestle at 152 pounds and Sieracki will compete at 167.5 pounds. Paul Devlin (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) will compete for the U.S. at 286 pounds. Devlin finished fourth in the 2001 U.S. Nationals. The U.S. freestyle team will be led by three top placers at the 2001 U.S. Nationals: Jamill Kelly (Stillwater, Okla./Cowboy WC), Joe Heskett (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) and T.J. Hill (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lions Den). Kelly finished in third place and will wrestle at 138.75 pounds. Heskett and Hill both finished in fourth place. Heskett will compete at 167.5 pounds and Hill will wrestle at 119 pounds. Hill is also a 1999 FILA Junior World Champion. Others competing for the U.S. include: Chris Fleeger (Trout Run, Pa./Dave Schultz WC) at 127.75 pounds, Ryan Berger (Ill./Unattached) at 152 pounds, Andy Hrovat (Ann Arbor, Mich./Cliff Keen) at 187.25 pounds, Michael Dixon (Ind./Unattached) at 213.75 pounds and Andy Bowlby (Corvallis, Ore./Orange Crush) at 286 pounds. The qualifying event for the U.S. freestyle team was the University Nationals, which was held in Evanston, Ill. in March. The women's team will be led by 2000 World champion Kristie Marano (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) at 149.75 pounds. Four 2001 U.S. National champions will also be competing for the United States. Stephanie Murata (Lansing, Mich./Sunkist Kids) will wrestle at 112.25 pounds, Tina George (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) will compete at 123.25 pounds, Sara McMann (Lock Haven, Pa./Sunkist Kids) will wrestle at 136.5 pounds and Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) will wrestle at 165.25 pounds. 2000 U.S. World Team member Clarissa Chun (Kapolei, Hawaii/Missouri Valley) will compete for the U.S. at 101.25 pounds.
