The four branches of the U.S. Military will battle for the Armed Forces Championships title at the U.S. Marine Corps Base in Camp Lejeune, N.C., March 20 & 21. Top wrestlers from the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Army, the U.S Marine Corps, and the U.S. Navy will compete in men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman duals. Greco-Roman will compete on Saturday and freestyle on Sunday at the Geottge Memorial Field House. Some of the top competitors from the defending U.S. Army team are: • Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army): 2008 Olympic Team Trials champion, seven-time Armed Forces champion, two-time World champion, eight-time U.S. Nationals champion • Faruk Sahin (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army): 2009 World Team Trials champion, 2009 U.S. Nationals champion, 2008 Olympic Team Trials runner-up • Jermaine Hodge (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army): 2009 U.S. Nationals champion, two-time Armed Forces champion • Tim Taylor (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army): three-time Armed Forces champion, 2007 U.S. Nationals runner-up • Jeremiah Davis (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army): two-time U.S. World Team Trials champion, 2006 U.S. Nationals champion The U.S. Army’s head coach Shon Lewis recognizes the tough competition at the Armed Forces Championships, but is confident in his team. “It’s always a tough tournament. No matter what it looks like on paper and the number of championships we have won, the competitions are always stiff. The other branches of the U.S. Military always put up a tough competition,†said Lewis. The healthy rivalries amongst the branches of the U.S. Military make this tournament one of the most intense competitions in the country. The U.S. Army seeks to claim their ninth consecutive Armed Forces Wrestling Championship title. Individual wrestlers back to defend their titles this year are U.S. Army’s Dremiel Byers (120 kg/264.5 lbs.), Faruk Sahin (66 kg/145.5. lbs.), Tim Taylor(120 kg/264.5 lbs.), Jeremiah Davis (60 kg/132 lbs.), and Jermaine Hodge (55 kg/121 lbs.).
