Rix wins silver medal on final day of Ukrainian Memorial International

KIEV, Ukraine - Deanna Rix (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) claimed a silver medal on the final day of the Outstanding Ukrainian Wrestlers Memorial International on Sunday.

Rix went 3-1 for the day, losing in the finals to Sona Ahmadli of Azerbaijan by fall in the second period. 

Rix had a big win in the semifinals, defeating 2009 World bronze medalist Ganna Vasilenko of Ukraine, 3-1, 1-0. Other victories were against Alena Filipova of Belarus and Katsiaryna Yanushkevich of Belarus.

Rix has placed fifth at the last two Women's World Championships at her weight class.

During the two-day tournament, the United States won three women's freestyle medals. On Saturday, winning a silver medal at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. was Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids). Winning a bronze medal at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. was Elena Pirozkhova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC).

"Overall, I think it was a good tournament. We have work to do but we are moving in the right direction. They were small steps but steps nonetheless," said National Women's Coach Terry Steiner. "Next up for us is Sweden, Belarus and the World Cup in March to finish up the international tour season. Then we move into the University World Team Trials and the U.S. Open."

The U.S. men's freestyle team had three competitors on Sunday. The top performance was a fifth-place finish at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. by 2008 Olympian Andy Hrovat (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC).

Hrovat finished the tournament with a 2-2 record. He opened with wins over Alain Bzykav of Belarus and Dyalet Shabonbay of Kazakhstan. In the semifinals, Hrovat was pinned by 2009 Junior World silver medalist Shamil Dibirov of Ukraine. Hrovat lost a bronze medal match to Valeriy Andreytsev of Ukraine.

Individual men's champions on Sunday were Atmir Khromov of Russia at 60 kg/132 lbs., Irbek Farniev of Russia at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Khadjimurad Gatsalov of Russia at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

The U.S. did not win a men's freestyle medal during the two day event. Also placing fifth on Saturday was Keith Gavin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Lehigh Valley AC), who finished fifth at 84 kg/185 lbs.
