Tony Rotundo photo HAVANA, Cuba - Three-time World medalist Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) captured a gold medal at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. at the Granma Cup of Greco-Roman wrestling on Thursday. Byers, a 2002 World champion, won four matches on the way to the title. He defeated Ramon Garcia of Dominican Republic, 1-0, 5-0 in the gold-medal finals. Byers beat 2006 Pan American champion Alain Rivas of Cuba in the first round, 1-0, 0-1, 2-0. Another key win came in the semifinals, when he defeated Nico Schmidt of Germany, 1-0, 0-1, 1-0. Byers had defeated Schmidt in the 2009 World Championships semifinals, on his way to a World silver medal. "Byers wrestled very well. He was very strong. We are proud of his win," said National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser. "His rival Lopez had surgery and could not compete, but Dremiel beat everybody in the tournament." The U.S. claimed two other medals, a silver medal from Cheney Haight (Boise, Idaho/New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and a bronze medal from Robbie Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Haight won his first three matches on the way to the finals. A key win came over 2006 Junior World silver medalist Jan Fischer of Germany), 3-0, 0-2, 2-1 in the second round. In the gold-medal finals, Haight lost to 2009 World bronze medalist Pablo Shorey of Cuba, 0-3, 0-2. "I am very proud of Cheney. It was one of his biggest achievements so far. He wrestled well and beat some tough opponents. He is taking another step up in his skills," said Fraser. Smith opened up with two victories, before losing in the semifinals to 2008 Olympic silver medalist Mirko Englich of Germany, 0-1, 0-2. In his bronze-medal bout, Smith stopped Erwin Caraballo of Venezuela, 0-2, 4-0, 1-0. "Robbie Smith, with sore knees, wrestled with a lot of energy and strong conditioning," said Fraser. "His loss was to the Olympic silver medalist from Germany, and he came back with pride to win the bronze." The U.S. placed second in the medal standings with its three medals. Cuba dominated the competition with 11 medals, including six of the seven gold medals. "We started off with a rough first session. We had 14 athletes here, and many of them lost. We have a lot of work to do as a team," said Fraser. "It is a very tough tournament, and was a great experience for our guys. It is good that we came back strong at the end to win three medals. It is not what we wanted. Now, half of our guys are going to stay for two weeks for training. It will be a great training camp. It is all about preparing for the future." The Cerro Pellado International, Cuba's annual international freestyle tournament, will be held on Saturday. The United States is one of the nations entered in the freestyle competition.
