ISTANBUL, Turkey - Les Sigman (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) placed fifth at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., the top U.S. performance at the Yasar Dogu International on Saturday. Sigman finished the tournament with a 2-2 record. He was defeated in a bronze-medal match by Nurhan Katayev of Kazakhstan, 0-2, 0-6. He opened the tournament with a victory over Daniel Yasenov of Bulgaria, 0-1, 6-0, 5-0. In the second round, he was defeated by Muhammad Reza Azarshakip of Iran, 0-2, 0-2. When Azarshakip reached the finals, Sigman was drawn back into the repechage. He won his first repechage match over Musa Mamedov of Kazakhstan, 5-0, 7-0. Three other U.S. wrestlers fell short of the medal rounds. The other U.S. athlete who won a match on Saturday was Drew Headlee (Morgantown, W.Va./Sunkist Kids) at 60 kg/132 lbs. He won his first match over American Coleman Scott (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC), 4-3, 1-0. In the second round, he lost to Kurdiani Mlkahzi of Georgia in two periods. Two U.S. wrestlers who will compete on Sunday have received their first round draws. At 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Corey Jantzen (Shoreham, N.Y./Lehigh Valley AC) will face Emin Azizov of Azerbaijan. At 96 kg/211.5 lbs., Bryce Hasseman (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) will wrestle Salih Erinc of Turkey.
