Oregon State’s Jed Pennell is Pac-10 Wrestling Newcomer of the Year

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's Jed Pennell is the Pacific-10 Wrestling Newcomer of the Year, it has been announced by conference commissioner Tom Hansen. Pennell (Cave Junction, Ore./Illinois Valley HS), a freshman 165-pounder, placed fifth at the Pacific-10 Championships and qualified for the NCAA Championships.    Arizona State 141-pounder Eric Larkin was named the Pac-10 Wrestler of the Year and former ASU coach Lee Roy Smith was named Pac-10 Wrestling Coach of the Year.    Pennell went 17-12 with three pins in his first season of varsity competition for the Beavers, and he scored team bonus points for a pin, technical fall, major decision or forfeit in 28 percent of his matches.    Among Pennell's wins was an upset of fourth-ranked Steve Blackford of Arizona State, and four of his losses were in overtime.    Pennell helped OSU to a 12-7 dual meet record, including an 8-2 mark in the Pac-10. The Beavers placed third in the Pacific-10 Championships and tied for 18th in the NCAA Championships.
