CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Tom Brands was in a much better mood Sunday.

Brands watched his top-ranked Iowa Hawkeye wrestling team earn hard-fought victories at 125, 157 and 165 pounds in downing No. 2 Iowa State 19-12 in the National Duals finals on Sunday afternoon at the UNI-Dome.

Iowa extended its school-record dual winning streak to 51 wins by capturing its third straight National Duals title and sixth overall. The Hawkeyes won despite having three starters out with injuries.

"We came out slugging in that fight," said Brands, whose team is 13-0 this season. "We got knocked down a couple of times, but we got back up a lot. Was that our best lineup out there? It doesn't matter because we believe in our guys. Our depth is deep and we are progressing."

Iowa's Matt McDonough rallied to pull out a thrilling 9-8 win over Iowa State's Andrew Long in a wild match at 125. Long cradled McDonough to his back early in the bout, but the hard-charging McDonough kept coming with his relentless attack to earn the win.

Hawkeye Aaron Janssen scored a takedown in overtime to edge Andrew Sorenson 3-1 at 157.

Iowa's Ryan Morningstar followed by avenging two earlier losses this season as he rallied to beat Jon Reader 5-4 in a battle of All-Americans at 165. Morningstar powered in on a late takedown and then rode Reader out to earn the pivotal triumph.

Hawkeye Jay Borschel (174) was named Outstanding Wrestler.

Iowa won five straight matches at 141, 149, 157, 165 and 174 to seize control of the dual.

Iowa and Iowa State met in the National Duals finals for first time since 1992. Iowa State was seeking its second title after winning this event in 2000.

"We are going to be fine - we're going to be wrestling our best in March," ISU coach Kevin Jackson said. "We are still flawed in some areas and we need to finalize some things. We're going to keep improving and keep getting better.

"We competed hard and just didn't quite get it done. But I tell you what, we're going to get them. We're going to get them."

In the semifinals, Iowa downed Minnesota 28-12 while Iowa State beat Ohio State 23-9. ISU's Jerome Ward knocked off past NCAA champion Mike Pucillo 5-3 at 184 to highlight the win.

Teams also winning championships on Sunday were Nebraska-Omaha (Division II), Augsburg (Division III), Notre Dame College (NAIA), Iowa Central (Junior college) and Oklahoma City (women's college).
