No-Gi Open champion Kelly Anundson, who won two gold medals in Grappling this weekend.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - After winning three World Grappling medals in his career without claiming a title, Brian Peterson (Valencia, Calif./Big John McCarthy's UTA) finally reached the top of the podium with a gold-medal victory at 60 kg/132 lbs. in the Gi division at the FILA Grappling World Championships on Sunday.

Peterson (Valencia, Calif. (Big John McCarthy's UTA) got ahead early and held on to defeat U.S. teammate Bruce Guevera (Naperville, Ill./Overtime MMA), 3-2 in the final round. His gold medal will now go along with a silver and two bronze medals in past Grappling World events, competing on both the Gi and the No-Gi divisions.

Peterson was the lone U.S. champion in the men's No-Gi division, but the U.S. had enough depth in all divisions to edge Brazil for the team title. The victory gave the United States a clean sweep of all four divisions contested during the weekend.

"I was very surprised. Brazil had four champions in the six divisions. I am very proud of our athletes, but I don't think we performed to what we are capable of," said USA Grappling Coach Ricardo Liborio.

The U.S. finished with four silver medalists. Joining Guevera as runners-up were Din Thomas (Coconut Creek, Fla./American Top Team) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Cole Miller (Coconut Creek, Fla./American Top Team) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Jarod Lawton (Wellington, Fla./American Top Team) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Thomas and Miller lost very close battles with talented opponents. Thomas fell to Brazil's Renato Taveres, 1-0 and Miller fell to Peter Mettler of Switzerland, 2-0. Miller had a tight arm bar on Mettler but was unable to secure a submission before time ran out.

Lawton fell 2-1 in the finals to Marcos Oliveira of Brazil.

Also scoring points that helped Team USA to win the title were bronze medalists Kyle Bracey (Amarillo, Texas/Roughrider Wrestling) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Charles McCarthy (Coconut Creek, Fla./American Top Team) at 120 kg/164.5 lbs.

Also completed on Sunday evening was the Open divisions in both men's and women's Gi Grappling, as well as the men's No-Gi Open division. Athletes from any weight class can enter the Open division.

Capturing the Open division for men in No-Gi Grappling was Kelly Anundson (Columbia, S.C./Black Knight WC), who defeated U.S. teammate Mario Rinaldi (Port St. Lucia, Fla./American Top Team), 2-1, in overtime. It was Anundson's second gold medal for the weekend, after winning the 120 kg/264.5 lbs. title in No-Gi on Saturday.

Capturing the women's Open Gi division was Tara LaRosa (Woodstown, N.J./Philadelphia Fight Factory), who won a three-athlete roundrobin to take the crown. Both of her opponents were Canadians, who were competing two weight classes higher than LaRosa during the weekend.

LaRosa went home with four medals this weekend, winning golds in the Gi division at 59 kg/130 lbs. and in the Open division. She was also a silver medalist in the No-Gi competition at 59 kg/130 lbs. and a bronze medalist in the No-Gi Open division. She was the only American to win four medals during the weekend.

Winning the Open division for men in Gi Grappling was Brazil's Ailton Azevedo. The top placing American in the Open division was Robert Redman (San Jose, Calif./San Jose State WC), who finished fifth.

In addition to the competition today, there was also a USA vs. Brazil judo dual meet, which was webcast on TheMat.com
