Brent Metcalf (Davison, Mich./University of Iowa) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Dec. 1-7.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Metcalf's third-period pin over Mitch Mueller at 149 pounds was the difference as No. 1 Iowa edged No. 2 Iowa State 18-16 on Dec. 6 at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.

Metcalf, a senior, won an NCAA title and the Hodge Trophy in 2008. He placed second in the 2009 NCAA Championships.

He led the Hawkeyes to back-to-back NCAA team titles in 2008 and 2009.

Metcalf is a top international prospect in freestyle. He placed second in the 2009 U.S. Nationals at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. He is a past U.S. Junior World Team member.
