The University of St. Thomas Athletic Director Steve Fritz has confirmed that the university will announce on Friday that it is dropping its men's wrestling team. Rumors to that effect had been circulating in the wrestling media throughout the day. "Yes, we will announce it tomorrow," said Fritz. "We are cutting a number of things across the university. We were given a charge across the university to make cuts." Fritz said the decision to cut wrestling was based upon budgetary issues, and was not related to compliance with Title IX. "We have struggled for a long time with our wrestling program, including the number of participants the last few years" said Fritz. "In the last few years, we have had eight to a dozen athletes, and less than that when we got to the conference level." Fritz noted that he had received considerable response from the wrestling community throughout the day. "It's a very active community," he said. "We just met with the wrestling coaches about this yesterday. My day has been filled taking calls from the wrestling community. I don't mind doing that, but it was interesting." St. Thomas competes in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and Division III of the NCAA. Prior to the dropping of wrestling, its student-athletes competed in 12 men's and 11 women's varsity sports. Press Release from St. Thomas officials
