Jordan, Yonushonis, Mitchell, Jacobson win bronzes at Henri Deglane Challenge in France

NICE, France - Four U.S. wrestlers won bronze medals at the Henri Deglane Challenge, an international tournament with competition in all three Olympic styles of wrestling, Nov. 27-28.

Winning bronze medals were men's freestyle wrestlers Michael Mitchell (Stanford, Calif./Cardinal WC), Raymond Jordan (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs.and James Yonushonis (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. plus women's freestyle wrestler Sharon Jacobson (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 55 kg/121 lbs.

Jordan defeated Andrei Frant of Romania in the bronze-medal match. Jordan was a college star at the Univ. of Missouri, and is now an assistant coach at Arizona State.

Jordan opened with wins over a pair of French wrestlers, Anthony Fasugba and Anis Gharbi, then lost to another French wrestler Ahmed Said Itaev in the semifinals.

Yonushonis earned his bronze medal with a victory over Dan Palinkas of Slovakia. He opened the tournament with a loss to Firat Binici of Turkey. Yonushonis competed for Penn State in college.

Mitchell, who wrestled for Duke and now trains at Stanford, finished with a 3-1 record. He defeated Benjamin Froment of France in the bronze-medal match.

Jacobson, who is a past U.S. Nationals champion, won her bronze-medal match against  Fatima Benfouzari of France. She fell in her first match to multiple World medalist Natalia Golts of Russia.

In Greco-Roman, the top U.S. performances were fifth place finishes by Kerry Regner, (Darlington, Pa./Sunkist Kids) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Sherwin Severin (Colorado Springs, Colo./US Air Force) at 84 kg/185 lbs. 

The U.S. was tied in fourth in the men's freestyle standings and tied in fifth in the Greco-Roman standings.
