WRESTLERS OF THE WEEK: Nauman honored by EWL, Bowers by PSAC, Kjar by WWC

PITTSBURGH - Pitt sophomore Tyler Nauman was named the Eastern Wrestling League's Wrestler of the Week for his efforts on the weekend. Nauman went a perfect 3-0 at the Sprawl & Brawl duals, improving to 11-0 on the season.

In the latest InterMat rankings, Nauman is ranked 10th and is ranked  as high as seventh in other national polls. The Middletown, Pa., native will surely move up this week as he registered a tech fall (16-0) against Ryan Prater of Illinois, who was ranked No. 17 entering the weekend. 

Nauman, in addition to his tech fall, recorded two falls in his final two matches of the day. He defeated Davidson's Ben Thompson by fall (1:28) and Rider's Aaron Nestor in a fall (2:17).

Nauman joins teammate Ryan Tomei as an EWL Wrestler of the Week recipient this year. Tomei was honored after the Panthers' first tournament of the season - the Buffalo Open.

Pitt will send individuals to tournaments this weekend, but will not travel as a team. The Panthers' next match will be Dec. 6 at the Penn State Open, an all-day event.   

Gannon's Bowers named PSAC Wrestler of the Week

ERIE, Pa. - Gannon's Corey Bowers (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) has been named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Wrestler of the Week. It marks Gannon's first Wrestler of the Week honor since it joined the conference last season.

Bowers was Gannon's top wrestler at last weekend's East Stroudsburg Open. The senior won the 133-pound title with a 5-0 record, beating opponents from three Division I schools (Rutgers, North Carolina and Drexel). He recorded pins against Cullen Insenberg of Rutgers and Ky Corley of North Carolina and major decisions over Zach Haynes of Delaware Valley and Mike Doria of Nassau.

The Pasadena, Md., native collected his third fall of the tournament and his seventh of the season at the 4:51 mark of the championship match against Drexel's Frank Cimato. It marked Bowers' second individual title of the season. He won the 133-pound championship at the National Catholic Invitational November 7. Bowers is 14-1 this season.

Gannon returns to action Saturday, December 5 at the 2009 PSAC Championships hosted by Edinboro University. The Golden Knights then conclude the 2009 portion of their schedule Friday, December 11 against rival Mercyhurst at the War at the Shore held at the Erie Civic Center. The match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Kjar named WWC Wrestler of the Week

Utah Valley University junior 125-pounder Ben Kjar (Centerville, Utah/Viewmont HS) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference's Wrestler of the Week as announced by league officials.

Kjar the No. 11 ranked wrestler in the country (InterMat) had a very successful week last week where he went 6-0 overall, helped his team pick up three dual victories (as Utah Valley has started the season 3-0), and won the NC State Open at 125-pounds.

On Saturday, Kjar went undefeated (3-0) at the NC State Open in Raleigh, N.C., as he defeated The Citadel's Tyler Sim, Hofstra's Jaime Franco and in the title match he beat Tennessee-Chattanooga's Demetrius Johnson by decision, 11-4.

In dual action at NC State, at UNC Greensboro and against Gardner-Webb on neutral territory Kjar beat all three of his opponents. With UVU trailing in the team score late against UNC Greensboro Kjar defeated Eric Chandler by fall (2:15) to help the Wolverines win the dual. He also picked up a 15-3 major decision over NC State's Taylor Cummings, and with his team up big on Gardner-Webb won by forfeit over GWU. After the busy week in North Carolina Kjar is now 8-1 on the season.

The Western Wrestling Conference is comprised of seven schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming.
