Surrey, B.C., Canada - Six U.S. wrestlers won gold medals at the third Annual Hargobind International Wrestling Championships held in Surrey, B.C., Canada on Saturday, November 7.

Capturing golds were U.S. men's freestyle wrestlers Coleman Scott (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 60 kg/121 lbs., Ben Askren (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 74 kg/163 lbs., Travis Paulson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs., Bryce Hasseman (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 96 kg/185 lbs. and Les Sigman (State College, Pa./Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/265.5 lbs.

Capturing a title in the women's division was Stephany Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs.

Sigman and Lee both defeated 2008 U.S. Olympians to win their divisions.

Sigman stopped Olympian Steve Mocco (Coralville, Iowa/New York AC) in the finals in a three-period match. He won the first period, putting Mocco to his back, but was defeated in the second period. Sigman won the third period for the victory.

"Les has been pretty close with all these guys for awhile," said Assistant National Freestyle Coach Brandon Slay. "That was a big win for Les. He wrestled well against Steve. It was a special day for Les."

Lee defeated Olympian Ali Bernard (New Ulm, Minn./Gator WC) in the finals in two straight periods.

"She wrestled pretty good," said National Women's Coach Terry Steiner. "She scored off of Ali's shots. In the first period, she won on the clinch, scoring three points to the back. Ali had a low single but couldn't finish and Stephany was able to take the bout."

There was $35,000 in prize money given at the event. Champions in the seven Olympic weight classes in the men's division won $2,000, the second place finishers earned $500, and the third place finishers win $250. In the women's division wrestlers who won one the four Olympic weight classes also won $1,000, while second place earns $500, and third place walks away with $250.

In all, the United States won 15 medals, 10 in men's freestyle and five in women's freestyle.

There were also challenge matches between the men's freestyle winners for additional bonus money.

In the $5,000 bout between the 96 kg champ against the 120 kg champ, Sigman defeated Hasseman in a close battle. Hasseman won the first period, and had the offensive clinch in the second period, but Sigman was able to come out on top to tie it up. Sigman won the deciding third period.

Paulson defeated Askren in the $2,000 match between the 74 kg champ and the 84 kg champ. Paulson won the first period, but Askren captured the second period on a chest lock in the defensive position from the clinch. Paulson scored a takedown to win the third period.

In the $1,000 match between the 60 kg champion and the 66 kg champ, Canadian Haislan Garcia, the 66 kg champion, defeated Scott.

There were U.S. wrestlers in the finals at all seven weight classes in men's freestyle,

Scott defeated an opponent from India in the 60 kg finals. Paulson and Hasseman both defeated Canadian opponents in their finals matches.

Winning men's freestyle silver medals were Sam Hazewinkel (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Teyon Ware (Lock Haven, Pa./New York AC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.

Hazewinkel was defeated in the finals by Canadian John Pineda. Ware lost his finals match to Canadian Haislan Garcia.

"The U.S. performed very well today. It was a great day for our country," said Slay of the men's freestyle athletes. "Every single American walked away with something that they need to work on. It pointed out things that we need to get better at. That is why we come to a tournament here in Canada in November."

"We didn't wrestle that well," said Steiner of the U.S. women freestyle athletes. "We made a lot of mistakes and had some lapses. We have to continue to improve. We had trouble finishing shots. We have to open up more and make more things happen out there."
