California World Challenge opens season with a bang

The California World Challenge marked the beginning of the 2009-2010 Ultimate Challenge Series, USA Wrestling's Folkstyle series for elementary and middle school wrestlers. Over the weekend nearly 350 folkstyle competitors piled into Clovis West High School in Fresno, Calif. to help kick off the 2009-2010 Ultimate Challenge Series.

The eighth year of the Ultimate Challenge Series offers 12 tournaments ranging all over the country, and culminating with the ASICS USAW Folkstyle National Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa from April 1-4, 2010. 

Competitors in Ultimate Challenge Series events accumulate points by placing in the events, and then uploading their results onto themat.com, with the primary goal to earn an Ultimate Challenge Series Belt and become an Ultimate Dominator. This year's Ultimate Challenge Series features several marquee events, including three returning Folkstyle Tour of America events, the Salt Lake Slam, the Georgia Grind, and the Dominate in the Dells. 

In addition, the Ultimate Challenge Series offers wrestlers the unique experience of competing at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Lake Buena Vista, FL for the USAW Middle and Elementary School Folkstyle National Championships.

The 2009 Ultimate Dominator was Michael Johnson, Jr. of Illinois, who was also the Div. 3 champion. Others who won their age division were Devin Gulledge of Missouri in Div. 1, Max Darrah of Missouri in Div. 2 and Tsvetomir Petrushev of Georgia in Div. 3. A total of 12 athletes, three in each division, are awarded Dominator belts.
