Rick Gumble of Binghamton, N.Y. has been named Developmental Coach of the Year by USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur wrestling in the United States. The award honors the top coach in the nation working with age-group wrestlers and programs.

Gumble has been involved in coaching on the local, state and national levels for  25 years, He has served as a state coach for New York USA Wrestling in freestyle and Greco-Roman for 19 years, working with athletes at the Junior and Cadet Nationals. Gunble was named Northeast Regional Developmental Coach of the Year in 1993 and 2008.

He is a member of USA Wrestling's Coaches Council and has served as a member of the Greco-Roman Coach Selection Committee. 

Gumble has served as the event director for the USA Wrestling Northeast Kids/Cadet Regional Championships which have been hosted in Binghamton in 2008 and 2009.

He currently serves as the head coach at Chenango Forks High School. He served in that capacity from 1994-2004, and again from 2007-2009. He was also head wrestling coach for Johnson City High School from 1990-1994. He also did a stint as an assistant wrestling coach at Maine Endwell High School from 1979-1982.

Gumble has coached nine New York state high school champions and 21 New York state placewinners. A total of 23 athletes from his high school teams have earned USA Wrestling All-American honors on the Cadet or Junior levels. Among the wrestlers he coached in high school was 2009 NCAA champion Troy Nickerson.

He served as associate wrestling coach at Binghamton University from 1983-1988. During his years there, Binghamton had two Div. III national champions, four finalists and 12 All-Americans. He was also the head wrestling coach at Broome Community College from 1982-83. 

Gumble is currently the co-chairperson for  New York State Section IV Wrestling. He has been named Section IV Coach of the Year five times (1992, 1993, 1998, 2001, 2003). He served as wrestling coordinator for the Southern Tier Athletic Conference from 1994-2002. Gumble served as the Chairperson for the Empire State Games Central Region in wrestling from 1983-1988.

He  is a Silver certified coach in USA Wrestling's National Coaches Education program, and serves as a bronze-level instructor for the NCEP program.

Gumble was team captain and a three-time Section 4 place winner for Maine-Endwell High School. He also competed for Broome Community College, where he was the 1979 NJCAA Region III champion and a two-time NJCAA Nationals qualifier.

"For me, based upon my passion for the sport, I am so humbled to receive this award," said Gumble. "I am blessed that I have met so many great athletes and people who have helped me achieve this. The relationships with the young people, such as Kerry McCoy, Jason Gleasman and Troy Nickerson, are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. By coaching athletes at that level, I have been able to help all athletes as a coach."
