FARGO, N.D. - As expected, the team title at the Women's Junior National Duals came down to the powerful teams from California and Texas. Each team has won this event twice, and Texas is the defending champion.

At the Women's Junior Nationals on Monday, Texas won the team title based upon a large team that scored many points. California had something to prove when the dual meet event came forward.

Winning the first eight matches in the finals, and securing an impressive six falls, California rolled to a dominant 42-11 win over Texas on the raised mat in the FargoDome.

"They put everything they had into the tournament yesterday, but we can't beat their numbers," said California coach Emilee Rinehart. "I knew today we'd proved we were the best. I was not surprised with their effort. They worked hard in camp all week long. I can't think of a team that deserves it more."

Three consecutive pins by Kalin Alvarez-Knight (109), Brazil Marquez (116) and Samantha Ortiz (124) gave California the momentum to close out the dual meet in style.

However, the best turnaround from the day before came at heavyweight, where Ronny Elor of California pinned Yadinma Nwaiwu of Texas in the second period. It was a rematch of the Junior National finals from the night before, won by Nwaiwu.

"We talked in camp about the importance of this dual," said Rinehart. "We stress working for wins, point by point, before we work for pins and tech falls. We did tell them that pins were important. Against a team like Texas, every point counts. We came to prove something. The know that the title belongs in California. We have a lot of young girls on this team. There were no leaders. They came together as a family."

Placing third in the competition was Michigan, which stopped New York in the bronze medal bout, 37-20.

The competition was split into four pools, with each pool containing state-level teams and at least one draw team.

Each of the pool champions advanced to the championship bracket, where there was a semifinal round to determine the teams in the finals. Winning their pools were California, Texas #1, New York and Michigan.

In the first semifinal, California stopped Michigan, 31-26 and in the other semifinal, Texas beat New York, 30-24.

Second place teams in each pool entered the bracket for places fifth through eighth. Draw teams were not eligible to wrestle in the championship or fifth place bracket competitions.
