Seven wrestlers defending their national titles with victories at the Veterans National Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., April 13. The tournament featured the best wrestlers in the nation who are 35-years old and above. Competition was held in five age divisions. Among the repeat champions was Russ Cozart of Brandon, Fla., who was named the Outstanding Wrestler. Cozart, a four-time World Champion, claimed his fifth straight Veterans National title. He won the 152-pound title in Div. C (46-50 years), scoring an 11-0 technical fall over Craig Johnson (Broomfield, Colo./Colorado Stars) in the finals. Among the 2000 Veterans Nationals champions who won again this year in Div. A (35-40 years) were Michael Dehart (Bradford, Ohio/unattached) at 127.75 pounds and Dan Chaid (San Jose, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 213.75 pounds. Dehart won scored a 12-0 technical fall over Arthur McEntire (Apple Valley, Minn./Thunderbolts) in the finals at 127.75 pounds. Chaid pinned Ron Perez (Merced, Calif./Merced Gladiators) in 41 second in the finals at 213.75 pounds. Chaid also won the Most Falls Award, with three falls in a combined 2:48 during the tournament. He is a former Olympic Team Trials runner-up and U.S. Nationals champion. The repeating champion in Div. B (41-45 years) was the 187.25-pound champion Brad Swartz (Auburn, Wash./Vision Quest). Swartz scored a 10-0 technical fall over Randy Hill (Lenexa, Kan./SMWC) in the finals. Two defending champions in D (51-55 years) were able to claim titles, Shirzad Ahmadi (Coventry, Conn./NYAC) at 138.75 pounds and Don Apodaca (Huntington Beach, Calif./Golden West) at 187.25 pounds. Ahmadi defeated Jack Hornbuckle (Pouteau, Okla./unattached) in the 138.75 pound finals 8-0. It was a rematch of the 2000 finals, won by Ahmadi, 2-1. Apodaca pinned Murry Gurfein (Marina del Ray/Bakersfield WC) in 2:36 in the finals at 187.25 pounds. At Div. E (56 years and over), Glenn Clark (Newfoundland, Canada/Newfoundland WC) defended his title at 213.75 pounds, beating Roger Olesen (Redwood City, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) in the finals, 3-2. It was a rematch from last year, won by Clark, 10-2. In a competitive weight in Div. E, James Tanniehill (Indianapolis, Ind./Turner WC) pinned Joe Reasbeck (Superior, Wis./unattached) in the 187.5-pound finals. Tanniehill pinned four-time Veterans National champion Joe Seay (Perry, Okla./Sunkist Kids) in the semifinals in 1:59 to qualify for the finals. Tanniehill was an outstanding Greco-Roman wrestler on the Senior level, while Seay was the head coach of the 1996 U.S. Olympic freestyle team. Other Div. A champions were Rob Porter (Mahomet, Ill./unattached) at 138.75 pounds, J.T. Petty (Las Vegas, Nev./Next Level Athletic) at 152 pounds, Brad Christensen (Central Point, Ore./Club West) at 167.5 pounds, Anthony Porcelli (Des Moines, Iowa/unattached) at 187.25 pounds, and Pete Porcelli (Watervhet, N.Y./ATWA) at 286 pounds. Other Div. B champions were Jack Wurster (Forney, Texas/Team Monday) at 127.75 pounds, Kevin Russell (Chino, Calif./Chino Valley WC) at 138.75 pounds, Louie Lazzari (Cliffside Park, N.J./NYAC) at 152 pounds, Kevin Hejnal (Patterson, Calif./Manteca WC) at 167.5 pounds, Csaba Barkoczy (Phoenix, Ariz./Alhambra) at 213.75 pounds and Eric Davies (Pompando Beach, Fla./Coral Springs Destructors) at 286 pounds. Other Div. C champions were Peter Zurflieh (Camp Hill, Pa./unattached) at 127.75 pounds, Frank Halloran (Flower Mound, Texas/unattached) at 138.75 pounds, Sarkis Dermenjian (Van Nuys, Calif./unattached) at 167.5 pounds, Lamar Hudson (Irving, Texas, North Texas) at 187.25 pounds and Tom Hazell (Torrance, Calif./Gnarley) at 213.75 pounds. Hudson and Hazell defeated returning Veterans Nationals champions in the finals. Other Div. D champions were Tommy Reyna (Oklahoma City, Okla./Edmond WC) at 127.75 pounds, Lincoln Daniel (Santa Rosa, Calif./Bear Club) at 152 pounds, Gordon Connell (Chattanooga, Tenn/unattached) at 167.5 pounds, and Steve Wolfe (Homer, Alaska/Popeye WC) at 213.75 pounds and Larry Prosper (San Francisco, Calif./unattached) at 286 pounds. Also winning in Div. E were Melvin Cooper (Brooklyn, N.Y./unattached) at 127.75 pounds, Charles Hotcaveg (Murphy, N.C./Far West) at 152 pounds, who defeated returning champion Mansour Hornavar (Oceanside, Calif. Laguna Hills) in the finals, 3-2.
