BROCKPORT, N.Y - It was a great day for Columbia University wrestling. Two assistant wrestling coaches and one of their current athletes won titles at the Northeast Senior Regional Freestyle Championships at the College at Brockport. The athletes who won titles on Saturday have qualified to compete at the World Team Trials, presented by the U.S. Marines, set for Council Bluffs, Iowa, May 30-31. The Columbia coaches who won titles were Yero Washington (Jersey City, N.J./Sunkist Lions) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Carl Fronhofer (Hoboken, N.J./Sunkist Lions) at 84 kg/185 lbs. The current athlete is sophomore Eren Civan (Bethesda, Md./Sunkist Lions) at 74 kg/163 lbs. Washington, who was a member of Freestyle Team USA many times during his competitive career, last wrestled at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Indianapolis, Ind. He scored an 8-0, 6-0 technical fall in the finals "I have been working out so much with (Columbia assistant coach) Matt Valenti that I am in good shape," said Washington. "I did this for fun." Fronhofer, who was nationally ranked in both freestyle and Greco-Roman during his international career, last competed at the 2007 Dave Schultz Memorial International. Fronhofer was named Outstanding Wrestler in the event, after winning a very loaded 85 kg weight class. Among his victories was a 4-1, 1-0 win over Benjamin Wissel of Boiler Elite in the finals, and a pin in 1:41 over James Yonushonis of New York AC in the semifinals. Fronhofer beat Cornell All-American Cam Simaz in the quarterfinals, 3-0, 1-0. Both Washington and Fronhofer indicated that they are considering continuing their comeback by competing in the World Team Trials in Council Bluffs. Civan, who won Cadet Nationals and FILA Cadet National freestyle titles while in high school, defeated Chris Stinnett of TWC, 4-1, 5-0 in the finals.
