2001 U.S. Veterans National Championships to be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, April 12-13

The 2001 United States National Veterans Freestyle Wrestling Championships will be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nev., April 12-13. This competition includes wrestlers 35 years old and above, competing in four age groups.     The tournament will be held in conjunction with the 2001 U.S. National Wrestling Championships for freestyle, Greco-Roman and women.     Champions hoping to defend their titles include 2000 Outstanding Wrestler Joe Seay (Perry, Okla./Sunkist Kids). He won the 85 kg weight class in Division E (56 years and above). That was Seay's fourth straight Veterans Nationals title. Also winning their  fourth straight Veterans Nationals title were Russ Cozart (Brandon, Fla.)  and Donald Apodaca (Huntington Beach, Calif.).     Cozart won the 69 kg weight class in Division C (46-50 years). Cozart also won the Most Falls Award, with two falls in 2:17. Cozart is the most successful U.S. Veterans wrestler, with six Veterans World titles to his credit. Apodaca claimed the 85 kg class in Div. D (51-55 years).     2000 Veterans World Champions Dan Chaid (San Jose, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) and Dwain Burkholder of Woodland Park, Colo. could compete as well.     The age divisions for the Veterans are: Div. A (35-40 years), Div. B (41-45 years), Div. C (46-50 years) and Div. D (51 years and over).     The weight classes for Veterans are: 50-54 kg (110-127.86 lbs.), 63 kg (138.75 lbs.), 69 kg (152.11 lbs.), 76 kg (167.54 lbs.), 85 kg (187.39 lbs.), 97 kg (213.84 lbs.) and 97-130 kg (213.84-286 lbs.).     The U.S. Veterans Freestyle National Championships are open to any athlete who is 35 years old and above. There are no pre-qualification requirements.      Many of these athletes also compete in the Veterans World Championships each year. This year's Greco-Roman tournament will be held in Budapest, Hungary, August 10-12 and freestyle will be held in Martigny, Switzerland, August 16-19.      Registration and weigh-ins for the event begin at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 12. The preliminaries begin at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 12.
