NC State Student Senate unanimously passes resolution against dropping men's sports teams

On Wednesday, April 4, 2001, the Student Senate of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina passed the following resolution, offered by Senators Chuck Jones (First Year College) and Jonathan Ducote (Natural Resources). Not only did the Senate pass this Resolution, it was passed by unanimous consent, without a single dissenting voice. Anyone with questions about the Resolution should contact information Chuck Jones the following ways: Chuck Jones 200-B Watauga Hall, NCSU Box 21629 Raleigh, NC 27607; Phone: 919-512-9623 Cell: 919-412-1464 Email: cajones@unity.ncsu.edu; AIM: arctcwlf79 Jones hopes that this resolution approval will start the ball rolling on similar Resolutions being passed by other Student Governments. ===== A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED THE COMMITMENT TO TRUE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY IN ATHLETICS ACT WHEREAS, North Carolina State University has a proud tradition of excellence in the classroom and in the athletic arena, and a proud tradition of leadership in offering equal opportunity to male and female athletes, and WHEREAS, research shows that school athletics offer valuable opportunities for learning critical skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-confidence, as well as improving physical fitness and WHEREAS, many of North Carolina State University*s athletes, male and female, serve the community as youth mentors and volunteers, WHEREAS, elimination of male athletic teams in order to equalize ratios of athletes is a nationwide trend among universities, and WHEREAS, equalizing ratios of athletes is one way to come into compliance with federal anti-discrimination laws, but not the only way, and WHEREAS, anti-discrimination laws are intended to increase opportunities for female athletes, not to eliminate them for male athletes, and WHEREAS, female athletes do not benefit when men's teams are discontinued, now therefore be it RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate reaffirm its commitment to the spirit and the letter of Title IX (20 USC 1681) and for equal opportunity for men and women in all aspects of education, and be it further RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate strongly urges Athletic Director Lee Fowler and Chancellor Marye Anne Fox to establish a University policy against eliminating athletic programs or opportunities in order to adjust the ratio of male and female athletes. ==== Signatories: Hon.
