Champions Reunion and Fan Fest Military Tribute set for NCAAs in St. Louis

STILLWATER, Okla. - The National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum will host its annual Champions Reunion from 3:30-5 p.m. on March 19 at Union Station during the 2009 NCAA Division I Championships in St. Louis.

"The Champions Reunion is a private social with food and drink for fans that want to meet and mingle with Hall of Fame members, NCAA Champions and Olympians," said Hall of Fame Executive Director Lee Roy Smith.

Immediately following the Social as part of Fan Fest, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum's  2009 exhibit "Glory Beyond the Sport: Wrestling and the Military" will be introduced at 5:00 p.m. in Union Station.

"The Fan Fest program is an open to the public tribute to our military veterans and will be emceed by Don Blasingame," Smith said. "A select group of distinguished military veterans will participate in a forum followed by an autograph session with the entire group of servicemen who were invited by the Hall of Fame."

Scheduled to attend are military servicemen and NWHOF members Wayne Baughman, Doug Blubaugh, Josiah Henson, Werner Holzer, Lloyd Keaser, Charles Krulak, Ken Leuer, Alan Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, Bob Siddens, Gray Simons, Bill Weick, and many more.

Keaser was an All-American for the Naval Academy and won a World championship in freestyle in 1973 and Silver medal in the 1976 Olympics while rising to the rank of captain in the Marine Corps. Major Baughman coached at the Air Force Academy for 28 years, was a national champion in 1962 and competed on three Olympic teams.

Ret. General Krulak, Ret. Major General Leuer, and the Honorable Donald Rumsfeld were all inducted into the Hall of Fame as Outstanding Americans. In 1952, Leuer went to the University of Iowa for a successful career as a two-time All-American, winning an NCAA championship in 1956. His many awards and decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star with two Oak-Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and a Silver Star.

General Krulak was a member of the varsity wrestling teams at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and the U. S. Naval Academy. He is the recipient of numerous medals and decorations, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Rumsfeld wrestled for New Trier High School in Illinois and was the captain of his state championship team. At Princeton, he was team captain and a three-time place winner in the Eastern Intercollegiates. He served as Secretary of Defense under President Gerald Ford from 1975 to 1977 and under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2006. Rumsfeld was an aviator in the United States Navy from 1954-1957 before transferring to the Reserve.
