VARNA, Bulgaria - Mike Tamillow (Colorado Springs, Colo./unattached) claimed a silver medal at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., the only U.S. medalist on Saturday in the Dan Kolov International in freestyle wrestling. Tamillow was defeated in the gold-medal finals by Yasin Kilich of Turkey, 1-4, 3-4. He won his first two bouts in the tournament, stopping Remi Delcampe of France, 2-1, 4-1 and Dragomir Stoychev of Bulgaria, 3-0, 3-0. Tamillow, an NCAA All-American for Northwestern, claimed his first Senior-level medal on an international tour. Qualifying for a medal match but placing fifth was Matt Valenti (New York, N.Y./New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. Valenti, a two-time NCAA champion for the Univ. of Pennsylvania, finished the tournament with a 2-2 record. He was defeated in the bronze-medal match by Maeda Shongo of Japan, 2-0, 2-5, 0-4, Held alongside the freestyle event was the Nikola Petrov International in Greco-Roman wrestling. The U.S. had four wrestlers in the Greco-Roman event, and none were able to win a medal. The only U.S. Greco-Roman athlete to win a match was 2008 Olympian T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. Dantzler beat Vincenzo Scibilia of Italy, 3-1, 4-1, but was eliminated in a loss to Robert Papp of Romania, 1-0, 7-0, 6-0. There will be U.S. wrestlers competing in both freestyle and Greco-Roman on the final day of the competition on Sunday. The first-round draws are included at the end of this story.
