TheMat.com interviewed Seton Hall head coach Joe Ryan, whose wrestling team was officially dropped by the university today.    Q: Please explain how you found out about the decision to drop the team?  Ryan: "They caught us off guard. We came back from the nationals and the athletic director asked for a meeting with the entire team on Wednesday. He met with me a half hour before the meeting. They dropped the bomb. They told us they are dropping the team immediately."    Q: Did you have any idea this could happen, and why did they do it?  Ryan: "We had no idea. They said it wasn't Title IX. They said it was the budget. But our budget is only $48,000, plus scholarships."    Q: How did the athletes respond to the decision?  Ryan: "My athletes and the recruits who we have signed early are devastated. I have an athlete, John Garriques, a junior college transfer who qualified for the NCAA's this year at 184 pounds. Where will he go? There will be problems transferring his class credits if he leaves. We have other athletes who would also be affected. The team members say that the other athletes on campus are not happy. Our team is well liked on campus."    Q: What can be done about this?  Ryan: "My goal is to get at least one more year out of them, for the seniors and others who might be affected the most. I'll talk to our alumni and supporters to have them fight it. We've had a stronger team lately. We placed third in the conference and sent three athletes to the NCAA Tournament. We had some good recruits coming in this year, and some talented young wrestlers who did not start on the team this year."    Q: What are the feelings of the coaches and athletes on the team?  Ryan: "In two minutes, they killed the family. We had a strong bond between the alumni and the current wrestlers. They all feel deceived and let down. This is supposed to be a place with values. It doesn't seem right what they are doing."
